...and Michael Jackson, Kobe Bryant, and Ken Lay, and Jeff Skilling, and Ray Lewis. Are you saying that Rae Carruth is innocent? They had very damaging evidence against him IIRC.
correction. poor person of any color gets 5 years. this has been said already in this thread...it is absolutely true. I have never made any secret if the fact that in my younger days I was heavily involved in the drug culture...and I can list off easily several poor folks that got caught dealing small amounts and they got jail time...5 years was considered a light sentence...often it was more than that. whether or not a person of a different skincolor would get more than these poor white boys is not known to me...none of the non-whites I knew at that time dealt, so I have no personal experience. my point is that you cant just dismiss this as "all white people get off" you and I both know that is patently untrue.
Perception is reality and to be honest . .. More often than not . .it is true If you are white . . you get more benefit of the doubt Rocket River
One thing I don't understand -- maybe MadMax or someone can help me on this. How do different attorneys get different deals for the same crimes? Like this story.. a court-appointed lawyer gets her jail time. A self-appointed attorney gets her a slap in the wrist. Obviously money affects this, but how? What do the attorneys do differently?
Maybe a court-appointed attorney has done lots of these cases, and is a bit more cynical about the chance to get this person off. ("Look, I try a lot of these cases, and this is a good deal.") A high-priced can take more of a risk, because there's much more of a reward in the form of referrals to other rich parents, who, in addition to having druggie kids to defend, may have wills to write, or business deals to administer. A public defender just protects your rights, but a high-priced private lawyer protects your interests. I bet a successful, rich person's lawyer does a better job convincing the judge that a first-time offender (ie, first-time caught) will be sufficiently chastened by the arrest and trial that they won't do it again. Also, it's easier to convince a judge that a rich person doesn't have the same economic incentive to do this again. Also, I'm thinking rich people have a higher number of "credible" character witnesses (business people, leaders of the community) than poor people.
man RR i really hate disagreeing with you since you are always nice about things, but i just continually find your referencing of white people getting the benefit of the doubt in this thread with the article you posted kind of silly. you posted an article talking about some rich white girl getting a slap on the wrist, but the guy listed at the bottom of the article who got screwed was WHITE!!!
