It feels hot enough for me to create a steam powered electrical generator. Well not really, but it is freaking hot.

I'd go with foil for a radiant barrier....the paint is really only effective is someone really good is doing it and even then you max out at 75% if that....

www.atticfoil.com is one supplier we're considering for a retrofit project on a commerical building. Our last building we integrated it during construction using plywood that had it built in - think techshield is the product. Works great.

Just got my latest electric bill and, while not great, it wasn't as bad as I had thought it was going to be considering I'm home all day with the AC running :

    CoServe in the Dallas area
    2900+ sq. ft.
    $298.69

I was unaware of how high energy prices were and how they were going to drop back to earth.

I signed the 12 month contract at the HIGH point last year.

    I'm done in a month.

I'm curious, for all you people with LOW electric bills. How much electricity do you use?

My bill is at $460 for around 2255 kWh of usage. I am at the .18 cents a kWh.

Man, to think in a month I'll be getting charged HALF of this @ 9.9 with Texas Power Company.

How much usage do you guys have?

Oh I forgot to add, I live in a two bedroom apartment that is roughly 900 square feet. I use those energey saver bulbs, never leave lights on. And keep the AC down around 75-79...sometime 80+ when I'm not home.

this place just must be a night mare. My fireplace lets hot air in, I'm on the 2nd story, and the building is OLD.

Windows don't seal worth a crap.

My July bill's details haven't posted yet, but I have gas heating/hot water and electric everything else. On my June bill, my electric cost was $153.29 (not including taxes) of the total $173.45 and that was for 1413 KWh, so about 10.8 cents.

My electric bill was over $400 dollars this month. As we speak i have Efficient Attic Systems putting in Radiant Barrier, at least 8 inches of insulation and 3 turbines on my roof to help with the heat problem. My attic was getting up to 140 degrees and beyond. The AC was running at 80 at 5pm. I hope this works. I got everything for half price. The total was $2,300 for a 2,000 sq. ft. house. I'll be sure to let everyone know if its worth the money.

Was averaging around 90 dollars the first 5 months of the year

    1900 sq/ft
    June: 250
    July: 340
with Spark Energy at 16 cents a kWh

Good thing I recently switched providers; went down to 10 cents a kWh so it better be cheaper in Aug.

Also I noticed my house wont stay as cool as it used to during the afternoons. I know its been ridiculously hot but I've never had bills pass $200. I had my entire roof replaced due to Ike last fall and had the AC system checked last month. I plan to replace some of the insulation that was lost during my home repairs (yeah I've been foregoing it); and hopefully that helps. Any other tips/advice?

I had 12 additional inches of insulation added to my attic and the radiant barrier spray was applied this morning. When EAS left my temperature was running at 80 degrees due to the A/C being shut off while they worked. Currently it is sitting at a cool 72 degrees. I've lived here 15 years and my house has never been this cool on a summer afternoon. The three additional turbines haven't even been added yet. They'll come back in a day or two to do that. For those on the fence about radiant barrier, it is worth every penny. We've put thousands of dollars into the A/C unit and this is the first time something has worked.

But how much off your monthly electric bill will it be? I ask because even if it saves $100 off your bill, it would probably take you years to recoup the cost, wouldn't it? I'm guessing your savings won't be as much in winter months, but even if you save $100 every bill, every month, it would take 2 years to break even for you. I'm wondering if you'll see $100 savings throughout the year, though.

But if your house was just uncomfortable, I can understand doing it. Do you get any kind of tax breaks for doing it?

That's what I was thinking. That's 3 times the size of my house.
