Someone mentioned it in this thread,DD created a thread about it, and we talked about it this off season. While posters were google eyes over the depth, I thought and others saw this as a problem. Not because depth is a bad thing, but when there isnt seperation between players in terms of talent, then thats a problem. Collectng assets like antique cars doesnt work unless you have true defining players at positions. Not to mention the young, inexperienced players are behind the older ones who are taking up all the minutes. Throw in the coach without a contract and we have all the makings of a useless season. Eric Manor behind Westrook is good depth. Why? Westbrook is a boderline superstar and cornerstone and right now manor is just a really good developing backup. When the starter has holes and the bench guy fills those holes, its like one player. Problem is both of those guys probably deserve to play and play alot. The rockets starters have holes big time and their backup fills that hole. From Lowry/Brooks to Martin/Lee and so on down the line. That was my biggest problem with the Ariza trade. Trading trevor created another logjam at a position where one of the rockets best player play. Now trading trevor for thaddeus young, tayshaun prince or another sf made alot more sense, but for another young sg made 0 sense. So this charade of a team continues. I will always follow the rockets. My reason for optimism this year was only to see growth of the young players, but when patterson, hill, chase, and guys like that are given limited minutes, then its really just a moot point.
Not that it matters much, but this wasn't Morey's plan - he wasn't trying to roll over the league by having 12 rotation-worthy guys surrounding two good 2nd option guys. He armed up for the 2010 summer free agency banking on assets over cap room, and struck out 7 ways over when it became the summer of stars putting the Free back into FA. He banked on them wanting to join a strong cast ready to win....and they preferred high profile destinations starting from scratch. Chris Paul came on the radar....and the Hornets talked him down. Carmelo came on the radar....but he's determined to be a Knick and the Nuggets have gone looney tunes in their trade demands. Yao lasted barely a month before going down for going down for the count. It's been a perfect storm of Murphys Law for Morey. Maybe he pulls a rabbit out of his hat and salvages this....but it could be that he went all in on this plan and they only way to get back is to hit a giant reset button this February.
Morey will have to step in and force Rick to go young, do you think Morey has the stones to do that? I don't. DD
Morey probably wants to give it another go at the FAgent/trade route this summer and in 2012, waiting for a superstar to become available. Now, Les might not show so much patience and if anyone can move along the process...it's Les.
I was talking about this season, IMO, they should bench the vets and go young, guys like Hayes and Battier have nothing to play for, go young, trade those guys if you can but they are not going to improve their value now, they are what they are... Put in Twill, put in PPat, play Hill, bench the old veterans.....this season is done, start playing for next season. DD
They should but Morey and Adelman won't want to do that, they already made it clear. Unless we get completed destroyed on the next road trip, they will keep playing the vets. Les needs to step in soon and start barking some orders. I understand he isn't a vocal owner but he has been quite long enough, time to speak up.
Then Morey is not that good as a GM, he needs to take a longer view, that is his job....if he agrees the season is over, then he needs to force the coach to play the youth, that is what a good strong GM should and would do. DD
Which is what I said when Yao limped off the court 2 yrs ago. This process shouldve started last season and the team would be further along with a sense of direction. There was 0 reason to believe without any semblence of interior defense or defense in general that this team was anything more than the warriors or raptors. Instead, like you said in the comfort foods thread they brought back all the older players, knowing adelman is going to play them and win a bunch of meaningless games similar to jvg. In a way,i cant say I dont blame adelman. Its all about win and losses in terms of coaching and coaching record. When and if the gm steps in and tells the coach who to play, he's over stepping his boundries. If a major trade isnt made, the rockets will again know 0 about their young talent and will win 30 games. Thats not a good place to be.
I think since Yao was under contract they had to give it one more try.....and they did.....now is the time to move towards rebuilding. I do think the GM has to step in though, if the coach is not going to be on board with the play for the future strategy, but that is probably because Rick doesn't have a contract. Maybe DM sits down and offers and extension at the same time? Put the decision on Rick as to whether he wants to be here for the rebuilding which could be quick, or slow.... DD
It just pops more with the words ups, hard and g involved, I'm surprised there's no Carl Herrera sighting. It just became too weird for me.
