Just watched The Natural last week for the first time - GREAT Movie. But, my favorite baseball movie is still... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/aceWXcvFOvI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Field of Dreams for me. great mystery, good story telling, shows the flaws of human beings and baseball itself, yet rises above these imperfections and leads us to an unexpected pure moment where the father is playing catch with his son. Well done.
It's all about Sandlot for me, though plenty of the other movies in this thread are great too. btw this thread should be a poll.
To me, Field of Dreams is far and away the best "baseball" film. It captures the spirit of the game, the aforementioned Father-Son connection, and drips with nostalgia. But it's about so much more than baseball. It's a profound human experience that is powerful for those that can relate to the subject matter. The writing, directing, and acting are bravura. Most "sports" movies get bogged down with obligatory on the field action sequences and cameos by players. Pride of the Yankees, Fear Strikes Out, and the Natural are good films. The Natural (which I like a lot), while a good film, is darker and lacking the complexities/depth of FoD IMO. I actually liked portions of Cobb, so what do I know though? And who can honestly say they didn't shed a tear while watching Brian's Song, a made for TV film that packed a punch?
I grew up playing Sharpstown Little League where they filmed most of the on field stuff. In fact, we had a practice going, while they were shooting ......
Field of Dreams is the best baseball film, but Bang the Drum Slowly is one for those that like Brian's Song and another good baseball film was Eight Men Out.
2 reasons why The Sandlot is the best baseball movie of all time.. 1. Hercules the Dog 2. James Earl Jones
equally love all the ones listed. sandlot is a part of my childhood. Field of dreams I didn't appreciate until I grew up. Another baseball movie that I liked that I watched recently waiting for boardwalk empire was SUGAR. It's more about a latin american player adjusting to life in the U.S of a. =)
The Rookie? Really? Probably the worst baseball movie ever made. For Love of the Game is tops on my baseball list, and third behind Hoosiers and Caddyshack as the greatest sports movies ever.
