guys, the opening report in this thread is very skeptical. They cannot put us over some limit. There is a high probability that there won't even be a Luxury Tax triggering next year. The one that we are reading about that just triggered is for paying up on last year's salaries. I agree, especially since once he signs an offer sheet, SnTs are no longer allowed. What I don't get is that I agree with a few others here; this is good news. We will match a 4yr MLE. That's just about all that he is worth, imo, and it is certainly what a lot of us were hoping for. NIKEstrad, small point...the clock doesn't start ticking until the ROFR team receives the Offer Sheet w/contract in hand. That can take 1-2 days after the announcements, since the league office must look over the contract first.
I think CD and Les were hoping to sign Posey at 3-4 mil a year. 22 mil for 4 year is more than they initially planned. That is why they need to think it over. Memphis's making Posey this offer is more "putting your opponent into trouble" than "improving yourself". I bet they must be preying that we match the offer. Let's take the whole 15 days to consider. Meanwhile, check out other options. There is no point of letting Memphis off hook too soon.
Why not Francis and moochie Mobley, Rice Griffin, hawkins, nahbar Taylor, Cato Yao, Collier let posey go and SIGN Steven Jackson, hell i think Jackson is better than Posey. We could also sign a shooter at 2. Francis will play about 41 mins a night and so Will Mobley. That leaves 7 mins for Rice and moochie to play and they gotta split that. Griffin should be able increase his minutes to about 35-40 if the pot doesnt mess his lungs up.So that leaves 8-13 mins for Hawkins and Bokie to split. Taylor and Cato can each play 24 mins a game or around there. and we know that Yao will play around 40 mins which leaves 8 mins that collier is in there.
well one thing in this thread i can guarantee is that collier won't be playing 8 minutes a game for us anytime soon.
man, to read this thread you'd think his initials were JC, not JP...i know i'll get crucified for this, but he's not the second coming....
Man, eight pages before he even SIGNS THE OFFER! When he signs, this thread could break all records! Please correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that our Bird rights allow us to re-sign a RFA regardless of cap issues, so we can match the offer regardless of our cap situation. This means we can sign a free agent with MLE money and THEN match the offer to Posey. Posey getting an offer sheet may have been what the Rockets were waiting for. Within the 15 day window, the Rockets may sign someone like Piatkowski (sorry, Horry's gone, too) and then re-sign Posey. TMo is still out there and may be back, too. Hawkins will probably return. Mattox will almost certainly be replaced by Miskiri, and someone will take Collier's place, possibly Badiane; however, the Rockets may save money by only carrying 13-14 players. Anyway, I'm assuming we will sign Piatkowski and then re-sign Hawkins and Posey. I like what I see: Centers: Yao, Cato Flower Forwards: Taylor, Griffin Small Forwards: Posey, Nachbar, Rice Shooting Guards: Mobley, Piatkowski, Hawkins Point guards: Francis, Miskiri, Norris Even if Posey goes to Memphis, it's not a disaster. JVG is used to small ball in a worst case scenario, and more likely we'll pay short money to a Jumaine Jones, Donny Marshall, Kendall Gill, etc., and see what happens next year. Unfortunate, but not that big a deal. BTW here's what The Sporting News' Sean Deveney has to say about some of the players mentioned: Eric Piatkowski. I'm still waiting for teams to react to zone defenses by landing better shooters. I hear it talked about, but I don't see it happening. Some very smart team is going to give Piatkowski a modest contract, and let him fire away from the perimeter. James Posey. Posey is a stifling defender and a very good athlete who's still in the process of learning how to shoot. He improved dramatically after being traded from Denver to Houston last year, in part because he did not force up so many shots. The Bulls would be interested here, too, but the Rockets traded Kenny Thomas to get Posey and will probably keep Posey. Jumaine Jones. He's a long, athletic wing player who does a few things well, but nothing great. He shoots 3s, but does not rebound well. The Cavs are unlikely to keep him. Posey looks like the best available option at SF, but at best he's the #4 option on the team. I'd like to add a POWER forward, as well, but you take what you can get and pay what you can afford.....
I say let Posey go. He can't shoot the ball well enough to be the ROX's SF anyway. I would rather the playing time be given to BOKI because we all know that Rice will not make it through the season without a plethera of injuries. At SF, BOKI is the future and the future is now. LET HIM PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
