Keeping Posey will be great for a reasonable price, if he wants more let him go. Replacing him is better then a long term contract when he becomes a role player and makes too much to be traded.

Just wondering are the same ones now saying SIGN SIGN SIGN Posey for any amount the same ones that said SIGN SIGN SIGN Norris and Cato. Then they are the ones now saying why do we have those high contracts for role players.

Hoopshype has Memphis at a shade over 52 mill with Reeves wiped off the slate. By comparison, we're a shade under 52 mill (not counting Maloney) before signing Posey. I have no idea how Maloney is affecting the cap, if at all.

I would be very dissapointed if we don't match a reasonable offer made by Memphis, given our fairly similar cap situations. They have a little more in expiring contracts (Person+Knight vs. Rice) but also 2 very significant free agents next offseason in Swift and Miller, whereas we have no free agents to speak of outside Rice.

Berman coming up in a moment, we'll see if he has anything...

Posey is solid at 3 to 5 mil. He's young, a great defender, can get to the hole, and stays healthy. He was averaging 14 points per game before coming to play with the Houston ball hogs. Plus, it would cost more to replace him than to keep him unless we went with an old man.

Honestly... Posey is not that great. And I feel if we rush to sign him for more than we can (or more than he is worth), we will be stuck in another Moochie, Cato, or Motay situation.

Agreed, Battier may be a smarter player but he is VERY limited as an NBA player. He would fit our team as maybe an 8th or 9th player where Posey is definitely a starter for us.
I think when all is said and done and the dust settles, Po-Z will be wearing Rockets red & silver.

I'd take Battier in a heartbeat. Solid, boring....but dependable, a great defender and, let me be blunt, nothing against Posey, but the sort of player that would go over well in Houston.

Still, BYC would come into effect. If you had Miami take on Person's contract, or Battier + whomever for Caron Butler (my personal favorite), then I say, Hell yes.

Wonder what's going on with Stromile Swift?

Guess it would just be easier to re-sign Posey.

I've long been interested in brining in Swift. I'm all for any move involving Swift...whether it's picks, cap space assistance to help them land Kobe next year, whatever the case may be. I think he would be perfect for the Rox if given consistent minutes, especially in a JVG disciplined system.

Not the subject of this thread...so I like Posey and assuming we can't better the team via a S&T, I'd love to see him as the Rockets starting 3. Even considering Boki's SPL breakout game. :D

I personally think y'all worry too much. Let's consider JP's situation:

    1. We sign JP to a MCE, I really don't know too many teams that are willing to pay over that for his calibre of talent

    2. Those that are willing to pay higher can have it matched by Houston, not to mention these aren't exactly great teams, whereas the Rockets are on the way up

    3. JP is getting PT in Houston

So what it comes down to is JP is getting paid fairly well playing on a team that's gonna be @ least a playoff contender for the next 6+ years and getting PT while he's at it. So why would he want to go to Denver or Memphis. I would like to think that all players not named EG like to win and JP has more chances of winning here than the Bulls, Grizz or Nuggets. He might get to pad his stats a bit more being the first and only option but nobody will mistake him for a star and he certainly won't choose an extra 3 PPG over a potential championship drive.

As for Denver, remember the only reason we got him is cuz the Nuggets didn't want to pay him in the first place, what changed since then? It's not as if Carmelo is suddenly gonna turn this pitiful excuse for a franchaise around and needs JP's production.

I would not "Posey is not that great". James Posey I think was one of the better players on the Rox last year. He will totally fit in with the new VanGundy philosophy. If you noticed last year Posey was a great defender and did the little things tosometimes save the Rox butt. We need to do whatever we can to keep him. My thoughts are that eventually he will sign.

Your scenario is flawed compared to the information we have been given.

True in theory we can match any Posey offer but from what the Chronicle is saying we are dangerously close to the Luxary Tax and even though we CAN match offers, because of the tax we might be forced to NOT match offers! That is the MAIN PROBLEM here.

If the Luxary Tax was not an issue here, Posey would be here and we would be looking to add MORE players via the MLE. But because of the Tax looming we only have SO MUCH to give to Posey and are pretty much out of the FA market to add players.

That is why the Posey situation is kinda frustrating. As an arbitrary example, I get the feeling that a team could offer Posey 4 million a year (which is BELOW the MLE) and the Rockets would not matchm because that would put us over the LT.
