I've responded to this and others who have some semblance of the type of person Pops is have also, we'd probably wager Pops didnt say a word. It's just a decision Morey made and it is what it is, but for those of us who've followed Pops, the guy isn't a whinger or complainer so let's not tar him with that brush.
Using the figures from Sham Sports or ESPN, Rockets were $3.35M over the tax. According to http://hoopshype.com/salaries/houston.htm, Pop's guaranteed money is $73k. For the whole season it would'be been $825k. Rockets are now $2.6M over the tax. Should the Rockets salary dump Cook to an under the cap team. They now have the flexibilty to take back a player, should there be 15 players on that other team, and absorb up to $897k of salary back.
Morey's real reason for waiving Pops, might be.... Spoiler http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2009/nov/16/heisley-iverson-we-want-decision-your-future-soon/ The Grizzlies and Allen Iverson have agreed to terminate the contract he signed with the team. Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace released a statement that said: “The Grizzlies and Allen Iverson have come to a mutual agreement that because of personal matters that forced him to leave the team on November 7, Allen will step away from the game at this time, allowing him to focus on those matters. “As a result, we will be ending our contractual agreement with Allen, which will allow both parties to move forward. We wish Allen the best.” Iverson, 34, has been away from the Grizzlies for the past 10 days on a personal leave of absence. The move comes hours after Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley said that he wanted an answer from Iverson about his playing future with the team in the next few days. Heisley had told Iverson’s agent, Leon Rose, that his client must decide soon whether he’ll play or retire because the Grizzlies won’t deal with the uncertainty beyond this week. Iverson appeared in three games, as a reserve each time, since returning from a hamstring injury. He averaged 12.3 points, 3.7 assists and 22.3 minutes, and rarely saw action near the end of games. Iverson’s complaints ranged from not starting to what he perceived as limited playing time and a lack of communication with Griz coach Lionel Hollins. Iverson acknowledged before leaving the Griz that he’d become a distraction. Heisley said he’d be willing to waive Iverson or trade him in a reasonable deal if that’s the request. Memphis can’t trade Iverson until Dec. 15. The Griz filled an open roster spot Saturday when they signed veteran point guard Jamaal Tinsley to a one-year deal. General manager Chris Wallace insisted Tinley’s signing had nothing to do with Iverson.
