The most fun part about this combo is trying to guess which is the fish and which is the chicken. Even after taking a bite, I sometimes can't tell. True story : at work about 4 of us jokingly decided to go to LJS for lunch because we hadn't been there since we were kids. We joked we couldn't tell which was the chicken and which was the fish. I picked up a random trapezoidal piece (presumably from the trapezius muscle of the fish), and bit into it. A jet of 10w30 shot out like a solar prominence and proceeded to nail my co-worker seated across from me. The ensuing laughter was joyous fun!
Hopefully you saved yourself from the LJS greasy hangover by spraying your co-worker. That always reminds me why I only eat there every few years.
Yeah, I always tell people I never have a problem not eating there, but for some odd reason, once a year, I get the urge to try it thinking "maybe it's better now". Yet every attempt, I end up with stomach pains. I haven't had the urge yet, this year, but it's coming.
I always liked the chicken planks at LJS. You can totally tell the difference between the planks and the fish. Not sure what the issue is there? LOL! The batter and crunch is the best part even with all the oil. The Cole slaw is a nice touch given it’s also fattening as f*ck! I haven’t eaten that crap food in a while but this thread is making me want the flounder sandwich and LJS! I wonder how many people have died after scarfing a bunch of LJS?
I've learned in my yearly trip to LJS. 1 fish, 1 chicken and a dozen hush puppies. I'm trying to get over the yearly craving for the fish and just go for the hush puppies.
Its a few years old now, and has probably been surpassed, but... BTW, I had to service some equipment in a Popeye's for several years and I will never eat at Popeye's again in my life. Some of them are fine, but some are terrifyingly gross and it is impossible to tell the difference from out front.
So I have a Popeye's by my house and I was picking up some stuff right by it, so what else... let's try this fish sandwich. I get in the drive thru... "may I take your order?" ... I place my order... "sir, *womp* *womp* *womp*".... "excuse me?" ... silence... so I place my order again "sir, we're out of sandwiches". Wth? Aite, I'm outta here... But.... there's another Popeye's in the other direction and not too far away. So I went there and got this new-fangled sandwich. I love fish. I've probably eaten McDonald's fish fillet sandwich once or twice in my life and didn't really think it was anything that great. This sandwich was mashed between the buns with tartar sauce, 2 big ol' thick pickle slices, and was spicy but not as spicy as their spicy chicken sandwich. The worst part about it was the tartar sauce, pickles, and breading overpowered the taste of any fish. I barely tasted the fish (no COVID). It was there and every 3rd or 4th bite, I could taste it, but there was just too much going on. Fatefully, on the last few bites, the remaining fish slipped out of the buns and I ate that by itself. If they offered the fish like that, I would love it. No bread, no tartar sauce or pickles.... In conclusion, the sandwich was ok. Nothing world-shattering. Let me buy the fish by itself so I can taste it!
Order Fish and Chips, and we they say that's not on the menu, say....you have a fried Fish Sandwich and French Fries, right? So, give me your Fish Sandwich with a side of fries, but hold the tarter sauce and pickles, and when they say, OK, #2 Fish Sandwich side of french fries and hold the tartar and pickles, you say, ... and one more thing ... hold the bread, too. kinda the reverse of this
I ended up trying the fish sandwich yesterday too and agree with a lot of your observations. It's ok/decent, but the sauce, pickles, and bun are overpowering. For sure it's miles better than McD's. I haven't had any fish sandwiches from BK, Wendy's, JITB, WB so can't compare. Also looked up LJS since everyone's been talking about it. Less than 10 locations left in Houston area; the closest 2 are 17 miles away on opposite sides of town. Forget that.
I am waiting for the first restaurant to feature "Fickle Pickles" by far the most tasty spicy pickles and sandwich enhancer of all time. https://www.ficklepickles.com/shop/ DD
