UGH!!!! Turn that crap off please. Why would u bring up such a horrible song pgabriel, what kind of person are you?
Are we still conflicted on the "Keep It Real" thing? Kind of an unsustainable theme when 1/3 to 1/2 promoting it go to prison, sold drugs to children, or get either shot or killed. Or OD from some kinda substance. Kinda wears on the listener after a while. When real actual Bloods and Crips started putting out records, I knew long ago it was time to consider other directions... Biggie and Pac were the best and worst thing to happen to hip hop.
Soulja Boy is definite #1. You know who's number one when they have a song called 'Kiss me thru the phone'. Lil Wayne is slowly getting up there.
I'm more of a fan of Lupe Fiasco and Jurrassic 5 and Guru and others like them but i can't hate on Soulja Boy. He's a kid trying to make money and he's not talking about (for the most part) killing, drugs, and treating women badly. He makes dance music and party music and for that, i can't hate on him. It does take some talent (whether it is lyrical or not) to become famous on youtube and millions off of it.
What's the new hip hop song that goes like: They call me mister sizzle?, cause I sizzle? Like woooah. I heard it on Monday when I was driving I45.
Dorrough (that ice cream paint job dude). I got into a big argument with one of my friends who said that song was one of the realest out right now. He also said that you can't get more real than money, cars, and girls. I tried to tell him to go listen to Nas, Wale, or Lupe and he said they sucked. He said especially Lupe because they don't play his music out here (we were in LA, this was two weeks ago). I laughed again.
Exactly. I don't know why someone would call him a "candy-coated, fakeass studio gangsta". You may not like him or his music but you have to respect his hustle. The kid basically came from nothing. And LOL @ "Popcorn Rappers". Never heard that term before until today.
This era of rappers is very weak compared to the early to mid 90's. No one raps with a flow like Tupac, Biggie and the rest. Soulja boy got famous with a song that had one damn verse. ONE are you kidding me?
What hustle? Ill admit he successfully manipulated his way into the business with a youtube dance. And all that stupid crap out of dallas, stanky leg and halle berry? It's popcorn because it's novelty rap. To associate that with hip hop culture is a bit of a shame, because its like they blatantly try to cash in on gimmicks and as little effort as possible. You think that Swag on song was Soulja boy really trying to put out a good song? I'll admit to being an elitist, but that's cause I'm spoiled on good rhyme scheme, meaningful lyrics, double/triple meaning wordplay, hard beats, and masterful mixing. Its a lot to try to push on people when I discuss music, and you can't argue that some people just want something to dance to. There's better things to listen to in that vein as well, and you'll do yourself a favor by catching Diplo tonight at Escobar. That's where mixing and experimentation should be going, not trying to see how far you can turn up the mother effing autotune.
What hustle? You know how many people try to get the success of where Soulja Boy is at and not even come close? Its not easy. If it was, everyone and their moms would be making billions off dance songs right now. Look, I like dope ass rhymes as much as the next person but people are hating for the wrong reason. Hip Hop always had "party" songs. They also have had silly dance songs way before Soulja Boy. They just never got as big as these current ones. Hip Hop was always about expressing yourself. And yes, that means in dance too. You can even say hip hop emerged from dancing. Sure, those songs may be the worst ever (i hate those type of songs), but to call it a disgrace to hip hop? Its not fair. Many people like those songs just because its catchy, fun and has a crazy beat. Its basically all about preference. Theres different types of hip hop for all types of people. Not all people can get into Diplo just like not all people can get into Soulja Boy. Also, is there something wrong with people trying to "cash in" on this fad? Last time I checked, most people get into the "hip hop" game to make a living. I don't care how "real" a rapper may be, they started rapping as a way to get out and make money.
None? Though some rappers today may not have been as good as Tupac and Biggie, here are a few that are pretty damn good: Wale, Royce, Lupe, B.o.B., Kanye, 9th Wonder, Little Brother, Kid Cudi, just to name a few. This new freshman class of rap (which includes everyone I named except Royce, Lupe, Kanye, and (9th + Little Brother), show some serious promise.
Man, just being real with you, Pac and Biggie aren't even the litmus test you want to use when discussing lyrical prowess, the art of "story" telling yes...and yes they both embellished their "stories" a lot to sell units but they aren't the be all and end of all of great lyricists. These "new" cats that you mentioned which needs to be clarified because Kanye, Royce, Lupe, Little Brother and 9th have all been out for years with multiple albums under their belts...anyways, the real "new" cats on that cover with the exceptions of Wale and B.O.B are to predictable. Their flow doesn't much change from track to track and they pretty much talk about the same content on all their songs. (Charles Hamilton's career by the way is about to take a nosedive after claiming that J Dilla Executive Produced his new album but no one in the Dilla camp (including Ma Dukes)has ever talked to the dude. I'm not even trying to get deep into it but check Elzhi from Slum Village discuss his rhyme pattern and you'll see what I'm talking about when I talk about great "lyricists"..pay attention at 2:28
I made a mistake with Royce, but when I say new dudes, I meant dudes who have came out since 2000. This decade. To me, I think Pac and Big were great lyricist. And yeah, Charles Hamilton is pretty dumb. He started going real down hill after SXSW in March of this year, when he stole Black Spade's beat for one of his songs (called 'Shinin'). He releases so many damn mixtapes, too. He should hold that in and release an even better album. Earlier this year, he released like three in a month (or so it felt like). I only really like four mixtapes from him (and the only ones worth listening): Well Isn't This Awkward, Pink Lavalamp, Sonic the Hamilton, and Crash Landed.
