Lol, I always thought of telemarketing as a boring job, but this scenario just occurred to me:

Telemarketer: Hello sir. Are you interested in the newest Nokia mobile phone series?
Guy: Yeah, I am, tell me more.
Telemarketer: What, you are interested? Wow, that's like, never happened to me!

I'm in IT and when I want to venture into an area that I do not have the experience necessary to get the gig that I want, I bs my resume to look like I do. Then I have some of my friends become my references for what ever I was bs'ing about. I haven't had to do this in a while because now I have a ton of experience at what I do but I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I have faith in my ability to pick things up on the fly so I've never really worried about not being able to do the work.

I suggest finding something that you want to do, say you have about 6 months experience and make up a story about how you were working somewhere doing that kind of job and the economy forced them to lay you off. Explain that you don't have a lot of experience but that you can do the work and that you are a fast learner. I guarantee you someone will bite if you are persistant.

If you have a degree, don't settle for a waiting job or some other crap job like working as a telemarketer.

UPS....start loading trucks or sorting...if you show up to work every day and volunteer to work extra shifts, they'll promote you to floor manager in a few months. Its a great workout and you make fairly decent cash. Paid for school doing it.

    Sincerely, a former psyche major...

Respect your ability to pick up whatever, and it's a good thing to say you're a fast learner.. but totally disagree with your advice to lie on your resume and make up experience during an interview. I don't think there's much more to say than that..

Bartending? I'm not sure how long you have to train to be a bartender, but I know if you work at like some of the rich country-clubs or places like that, you can make some pretty good money.

Did you do any Campus Recruiting senior year? If not, either that or not getting any office-type internships while in college were your two biggest mistakes. Then you could probably go to staffing agencies and get some decent temping gigs: Kelly Staffing always got my older brother gigs; AccountPros got me jobs twice as an undergrad that I had to turn down: once cause I already had another internship; and another time because my parents hadn't yet committed to getting me a car after graduating.

Maybe you could also talk to either your old undergrad or new grad school for mid-year on campus employment. You should be hitting Monstertrak and your college's recruiting websites every day. Also try Donovan Watkins or houstonjobs.com. Talk to some shrinks, see if they need assistants or secretaries or something. Or email your resume and cover letter to every local bank in the city asking for a teller job.

A few years back I was lost as far as a job goes. I waited and bartended, but at one point I was renting cars for Thrifty. Honestly, the job wasn't bad and you can make pretty decent money. The ability to move up was there too. Just an idea. Good luck.

I once applied for one of those "Marketing" jobs and they called me for an interview and all that. I Was thinking it would be door to door sells, so I asked the lady who called. She said there was a little but it wouldnt take long to move out of it. Then she was like "What time would be good for you on an interview?"

I Was like "Umm, Lemme think about it..... No thanks". Then she yelled at me...

I had 2 of these within the span of a week...

Job #1 had me go out training with a guy who drove a 1984 Chevette w/ no a/c to Lake Jackson in mid-July. We went door-to-door selling random crap. I didn't come back the next day.

Job #2 had me go out training with a guy in a white mini-van selling speakers. I'm sure you've all seen this guy. The pitch is that they were leftovers from a club install and no one was expecting them back. Well, after getting shot down all day long, we finally make a sale to some schmuck in Pearland. While they were making arrangements, I went inside the Randall's there to make a phone call (this was in the day of pagers, but no cell phones). When I came out, the dude was gone. I had no way of getting in touch with him. I had about $5 to my name. I was in Pearland,my truck was at their office on I-10 and Barker Cypress, and my home was The Woodlands. I had to wait for a friend to get off work and come get me at about 10 pm...6 hours later. I called that office the next day to see what they hell happened. The "boss" said it was my fault and asked if I was coming in to work. I went back that evening to get my truck...and throw a brick through their window. Now when I see one of those guys, I tell him that I'm calling the cops and if they don't leave now, I'm getting the baseball bat out of my trunk.

Yeah, there was a big thread about everyone's experiences with these "entry level sports marketing" jobs you see in the Greensheet a while back. Pretty funny stuff.

I answered one when I first got out of college. I showed up for my “interview” wearing a suit and tie (man, was I naïve) and the other 2 people were in cutoffs and t-shirts. One actually fell asleep while waiting to be called. Of course, I got the “job” and was told to show up the next morning for “training” and to dress warm….

The next day, we piled into 3 or 4 cars and they took us all to our executive breakfast…..at McDonalds. After I ate it and figured out what was going on (turns out “sports marketing” actually meant selling trinkets door to door), I told the guy I forgot my jacket in my car and asked if we could stop back by the office before we went out so I could get it. I got out of the car, flipped the guy off, got in my car and drove away. LOL.

Back on topic, car rental is the perfect job for someone with a college degree who doesn’t want to work in the field he studied (yet). I worked at Enterprise for 3 or 4 years out of college and loved it. Made pretty good money too. And a company car! Just got tired of the 70 hour work weeks required when you made it to management, otherwise I'd probably still be there.

I was burned with something like this when I was a youngster - showed up in my suit and tie to a room full of people. Listened to some of the guy's nonsense and got up and walked out -- can't remember exactly what we were selling.

Go get certified for EMT, pay is good for a part time job. It's my college job, pays the bills till I graduate.

If you want to get a job in the mental health field and put some of your undergrad education to use, you can probably get some type of case management work with the Department of Family Protective Services or MHMRA. Those two agencies are usually hiring b/c they have high turnover and the work is emotionally draining. They definitely pay above minimum wage - it really depends on whether you want to do that sort of work.

I laughed way too much for way too long at that ups video. It's probably because that would be something that I would do lol.

OP if you're going to wait tables, you should try the Cheesecake Factory in the Woodlands. If it's as busy as the Galleria one, you should do ok.
