Look beyond the name. As with any sport, the only true relevant statistics are from the last three seasons. Anything further back than that is almost irrelevant in the context of where the player is today on his curve. First, let's look at Schaub's season as a starter.

    Schaub: 87.2 rating, 66.4 completion percentage, 7.75 YPA, 9 TD, 9 INT

That's likely to be Schaub's floor. If anything, he'd be likely to improve upon those numbers, given that it was his first year as a starter. Now, Favre:

    Favre 2005: 70.9 rating, 61.3 completion percentage, 6.39 YPA, 20 TD, 29 INT
    Favre 2006: 72.7 rating, 56.0 completion percentage, 6.34 YPA, 18 TD, 18 INT
    Favre 2007: 95.7 rating, 66.5 completion percentage, 7.77 YPA, 28 TD, 15 INT

The Brett Favre of the mid-to-late 90s was a great quarterback. But since 1999, Favre has been the most overrated, overhyped player on the planet -- and I say that as someone who idolized him growing up. Since 1999, he's played 9 seasons -- and in 5 of those 9 he had a worse rating than Schaub did last season! In his last three seasons, he's had one great year and two utterly terrible ones. Given the fact that he's going to be 39 (and in this hypothetical) moving to a new system and a team with less overall talent, I know this version of Favre is more likely.

Furthermore, his track record in big games is awful of late. In the infamous 4th and 26 playoff game in 2004, Favre basically threw a lob directly to Brian Dawkins for an INT in overtime, setting up the field goal to end it. In the much-hyped matchup for home-field advantage against Dallas last season, Favre goes 5-14 for 56 yards and 2 picks before leaving with an injury. Aaron Rodgers plays the same defense and excels. I'll grant part of his poor NFC Championship performance to the absurdly cold weather, but he did again throw a game-losing interception in overtime about half-a-mile behind his receiver.

He's tried to return to the Packers. They won't let him. They've gone through an entire offseason preparing with Aaron Rodgers as the starter, and it's tough to switch gears. For reasons I listed above, it's likely that Rodgers would be as good as Favre this season anyway -- Favre's return would largely be a symbolic move. But perhaps more importantly, what incentive do the Packers have to trust Favre?

Back in late March during the NFL owners meeting, Favre informed the Packers that he wanted to play again, multiple sources have told FOXSports.com. Not only did he insist he was returning, both head coach Mike McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson agreed that Favre still had something left to offer and they would welcome him back. Despite the fact that those close to Favre have stated Thompson did not want Favre back, Thompson's was the deciding vote in agreeing it was not too late to have him un-retire at that time and start for the Packers in 2008.

In fact, team brass went as far as chartering a jet to fly to Mississippi to make it official later that week. The agreement was that the NFL's all-time leading passer would return for the year but would play an active role in making the situation easier on Rodgers, who would now be pushed back an extra year before taking over.

The group was set for this huge move when Favre suddenly phoned the team two days before the meeting was to take place and informed McCarthy that he had changed his mind yet again and was staying retired.

While team officials were stunned by Favre's reversal, they made the decision to move on and draft his replacement, a move that Favre indicated he understood at the time. The Packers selected two quarterbacks in April's draft, Louisville's Brian Brohm in the second round and LSU's Matt Flynn in the seventh round.

Then, a few weeks ago, Favre phoned the team stating he had that "itch" again to play. However, since he had jilted the Packers in March, the team simply took his latest request with a grain of salt. In addition, the team has put considerable time and attention into making Rodgers comfortable as the heir apparent.

It's not whether Favre would come to Houston. It's whether the Texans would want any part of him. And I can guarantee you, there's no way in the world Gary Kubiak would sit Matt Schaub for Brett Favre, and it's the right decision. Look beyond the name and the legacy (mostly created 10-15 years ago), and it's an easy call.

The thing about Favre is that he could help a team who is lacking a competent QB or team that is a few years away from developing consistent starter at QB.

He should be a team that is pretty well set, but is in need of good QB...I'd say

I actually think he is better than Schaub, he is more of a gamebreaker with explosive throws, but with it being Texans I think Schaub is better, because Brett does have his gunslinging moments that do lead to more interceptions. He could do it some years with Packers, because of the running game and defense. Some skeptics are right, since he did cost them a few wins.

I just saw on the crawl on the bottom of ESPN that the Packers aren't going to release him, and would welcome him back as a backup if he wants to return, so this is kind of a moot point now.

Cat, I'm not reading that. You have WAY too much time if you're hand to write a reply like that. That statement was re-donkulous!

None of the above. I don't want him to be our QB because we have too much tied into Schaub, and if we don't get a fair assessment of what we have with him now, we're just delaying the his progress one more year, after it had already been delayed in Atlanta for 3. Wouldn't make any kind of sense from a football standpoint, however it would make all the sense in the world from a business standpoint. You just have to ask yourself if you feel like Favre is that much of an upgrade over Schaub.....and honestly, even if he might be, would he be enough to take us beyond the first round of the playoffs? I can't say that he would be, in which case then, we owe it to Schaub to let him get a full year under his belt.

Dude, you have think that Aaron Rodgers is secretly enjoying the hell out of this right now. For years his role with that team was in flux every single offseason while he and everyone else waited on Favre to make his decision about continuing his career. Now, he's trying to do it again. Only this time the team is telling Brett he can be AARON'S backup, if he wants. That's a delicious bit of irony.

Of course they aren't going to release him and let him go where he wants.

They're going to make him look like the bad guy and then trade him somewhere out of the division.
