The addition of numbers such as '316' or '133', etc., to the end of Internet Screennames was brought on by the fact that many people wanted the same name.

For instance, If I wanted the email address Nomar@yahoo.com, I probably wouldn't get it. I would have to add Nomar316@yahoo.com.

However, on a BBS like this one, you could have simply registered as Padgett. There is usually no need for the numbers unless you want to be Steve Francis or Yao Ming or something like that.

so, Nomar give me your take on the fact the original UBB registered said:

User Name* [__________]

and that we have an old man here with an asterix following his nick. :D

It's not so much that I'm not willing to laugh at myself as that I don't get the humor, really, but no need to continue something beyond my comprehension. And I was not aware how un-cool it was to put numbers after names in the cyber-world. I was aware that numbers would help avoid duplication, but I didn't that the use of numbers was confined to those situations only. I will remember that next time. I'm also a little offended that no one has recognized the humor in my responses. If you re-read them, you might realize that I don't need to 'relax' quite as much as you might think. There is a subtle sense of sarcasm involved, quite a bit subtler than what is required to call-out someone for numbers-in-a-screen-name or typing-poll-in-the-subject-of-a-thread-even-though-it's-going-to-show-up-automatically, though those 2 are certainly classic examples of non-stop amusement to most Americans, I agree.

Yeah, I originally tried to register as "Padget45," (cause you know how much I love Scott Padgett), but apparantly there are many who aspire to have that honorable moniker.

Hey, MacBeth, isn't a legitimate definition of "subtle" humor "something beyond most American's comprehension."

heyrelaxpardner, I don't think you can get anymore defensive in this thread. it is more innocent fun that you seem to comprehend.

I think Bill Shakespeare would agree that the difference between "subtle humor" and your posts being "something beyond most Americans' comprehension" is the lack of anything substantially funny existing in your posts. But I could be wrong there...I mean, I have a number in my nickname - what could I know!!! And I didn't think any versions of the word "defense" were permitted on a Rockets BBS...

Padgett316 - few down here in Texas seem to know much about basketball, a sport that the current NBA hardly truly resembles, although some Rockets fans on this board aren't half-bad. Coming from Kentucky, maybe my expectations are just too high Maybe to oblige some of the curious Clutch-fans, I'll start a Poll (and type the word "poll" in the subject line) to get everyone's guesses on where my nickname comes from.

Ah yes! I think everyone here would agree that most of the humor in this thread exists in your responses.

oh, and I think President Bush would agree that the difference between your poll and the one posted right before yours (" Poll: Will the Rockets make a move today?") is beyond his comprehenture. Still, there must be a subtle difference in this poll that most all American's don't comprehend.

Padgett, I was messing with you because of your hostile response to HP. But, I usually try to stay above that sort of thing, even if I don't always succeed. So I apologize for piling on.

hehe, you're named after Scott Padgett, afterall. Now that's both beyond my most American's comprehension and funny, at the same time.

in the immortal words of Lyle Lovett:

So won't you let me help you Mister
Just pull your hat down the way I do
And buy your pants just a little longer
And next time somebody laughs at you

You just tell 'em you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway

I really should have taken more time to come up with a more clever nickname. I know that it really does represent more than a series of letters that I type in to view this BBS. Everyone across the world knows that the 'nickname' should exude every fiber of who you are. Like 'heypardner', for instance - now that obviously puts you in a class that will never be visited be mere mortals like Padgett316. My visit to this site today reminds me why I, like most people, hates the NBA, no matter how hard we try to still follow it.

ah, but there is something very subtle and "cyber-genius" clever in the moniker "heypartner" that you are just not comprehending.

poor poor padgett316...
loves bball | hates the pros.
loves the Jazz | can't admit it on this bbs
loves Texas BBQ | thinks the cooks are stupid bball fans who remind him why he hates the NBA just because he clumsily started a silly, mindless bball poll for a Kentucky fan.

You need to learn about paragraphs before people take you seriously.

1 sentence paragraphs are great because it gives it a "dramatic pause" feel.

Like every word you're saying is smart and stuff.

Try it.

I don't hate the NBA - I follow it closely, but I can't digest an entire game, and I think the players are entirely overpaid and underachieving. I don't like the Jazz one bit. I do like Texas BBQ, but your clever wit again has me befuddled with your intense 'cooks' analogy, wherever it attempts to poitn. I don't think NBA fans are stupid for liking the NBA, but I certainly enjoy watching the NBA of 20 years ago or college basketball today more than I enjoy watching the NBA today. I also hate how ESPN has taken the NBA's 'street popularity' to heart by flying as many of their black personalities down to the playoffs as possible, regardless of their credentials. I really think thought having Tirico, Scott, Frasier, Anthony, Elliott, Carter, Saunders, etc. all in one spot with only the play-by-play guys (whose faces are rarely shown in the broadcast) was a little over-the-top.

I must say that this thread has turned out to be much more entertaining than what the title indicated...
