All right. (not all directed at you rimrocker) There are 10 friggin' spots on the list. This isn't about genres. This is about what band can truly be called the greatest American rock band... So its not meant to be subjective. Like I said, I really love the Pixies. But they just don't belong on this list. Granted, REM makes the B team and is most likely a starter with asspirations of joining the A team. But they haven't stood the test of time like these guys have. So unless you want me to start a new thread with no other, quit yer b****in'
For blues/blues rock...Allman Brothers Band & CCR For punk/new wave...REM and the Replacements For psychedelic....Grateful Dead For jam band....Dave Matthews Band

They are. I voted for The Doors but I think the greatest American rock band ever was The Byrds. They along with Dylan and The Band pretty much invented country rock in the late '60s. If it wasn't for them, there would be no Eagles or Poco or anybody like that (that might not have been a bad thing considering how many people hate the Eagles, heh). Other favorite American bands (which I agree...they are not on the same level as bands from England and even Canada): REM Interpol (one of the contenders for best American band of today) Wilco (another one of the contenders for best American band of today) The Smashing Pumpkins The Flaming Lips Blondie The Cars Cheap Trick Heart Boston Kansas Love Nirvana RHCP
I voted for GNR because they're one of my faves. I don't understand how the Eagles could even be placed on this list to begin with. The Eagles are a ****ing abomination. Take it easy? No, take it SLEAZY. It seems remiss not to pay any lip service to the Americans that, you know, INVENTED rock and roll. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bill Haley and the Comets. And few musicians have ever been as influential as James Brown.
I kind of think Aerosmith has to win just because of the longevity of their success. They are not my favorite but when talking about the "greatest" they are fairly alone as far as being relevant for as long as they have been (technically the Beach Boys still exist but they don't matter at all). Aerosmith is definitely falling off but for a band that formed in 1970 to still be selling out stadiums in 2007 is crazy.
Actually, I mentioned the TWO I thought were the best and then listed my favorite ones (i.e. the honorable mentions) which were 14. So, 2 + 14 = 16. From where I come from, 16 > 20...not so sure if that relationship still holds in your mind...you being all liberal artsy fartsy and stuff. And BTW I love doing posts (not this one but the one you quoted) because rimmy always has to post some smartass response.
Oddly enough you did indeed type 20 band names (cheating and counting Dylan as a band since you brought him up in a band thread). Last I checked 20=20.
I like to see what other people have in their top ten. If I just say I like Interpol without mentioning any other bands, there is no context or frame to judge that opinion. It could mean I like Backstreet Boys (no homo) as my other fav. bands. But I don't.
Although Hendrix was American, I don't think "The Jimi Hendrix Experience" is considered an American Band. British.
If my job wasn't so boring, I wouldn't be here - trust me on that one. I guess I could do other things besides posting on the BBS or reading it such as sleeping at my desk or playing on-line RPGs or going into a chatroom and talking it up with losers like "FinDawg" but something would tell me that I would probably get fired for doing that. But in the meantime, I just will continue to read and post at this site while getting paid good money to do so - sure beats being a greeter at K-Mart, eh moes! Besides, I am not going to be run off this board by some skinny ass punk like yourself.
