    Simple question...

If you feel someone is qualified for the position, let's say president or governor, does it matter to you where they were born?

From a strictly constitutional aspect, yes. But as long as you're a natural born citizen then no.

Personally, it depends. Disregarding the constitution, if 4 years from now some guy from Italy moved to the US and ran for president then yes I would care. But if somebody was born in Australia and moved to the US with his parents when he was three, 50 or so years ago then I probably wouldn't care.

    Strange question.

If they are running for president, it means they were born within the US and it would not matter. If they were born outside the US, it still would not matter because they would not be running for president.

Each state has their own requirements for Gov, so it wouldn't matter because the candidate would meet the requirements for whatever state I lived in.

The question was not intended at someone who just moved here and is running. The question is specifically intended at someone who has already proved their loyalty to our country.

It's theoretical in the sense that all requirements were thrown out the window, and the person had proved loyalty to the country.

As others posters have said, of course it matters for the Presidency as that is what the Constitution says.

As far as a general philosophical argument where someone's born doesn't make much of a difference but I don't think this is a big enough or urgent enough issue demanding the Constitution be ammended.

What matters is where their allegiances lie.

For instance, I think a person who was born in a repressive, anti-democratic country and escaped (with hardship) to the US at an early age probably appreciates US more than most American-born citizens. Should he be disqualified for running from president? Maybe not.
