I am afraid of all politicians. It takes a very brave person to not be afraid of a w**** with a pot full of money and a bad attitude.
I fear our two party political system. We rarely see either party nominate qualified presidential candidates, e.g. Bush vs Gore or Reagan vs Mondale or Clinton vs Dole. Getting nominated for president appears to be more about who can raise the most $$$ as opposed to who would be the best leader of the country. Even worse, if a third party candidate is head and shoulders better than the Rep and Dem nominee, he/she lacks the $$$ to have a realistic chance of winning the race. There are other factors against third party candidates, but $$$ is the biggest.
Another very good point. Additionally, the general adherance to the party line, and partisanship in general, are also things which cause me to be uneasy, but they've been around so long, I guess I'm jaded to their dangers...
I disagree that no one has figured it out yet. IMHO, both sides have done just what you suggest. The differences between most politicians is smaller than ever as far as I can tell. I would actually love to see a politician who stands by his convictions and doesn't compromise to seem more moderate. I think calling modern Republicans or Democrats extreme is rediculous.
I fear people who refuse to use their minds and blindly vote a straight party ticket with total disregard for who may be the better canidate.
