The crab apple trees were 60 years old and had grown so large as to shade areas and make cultivation difficult. They weren't cut down, they were dug up and will be transplanted elsewhere. Basically the aesthetic restores Rachel Lambert Mellon's original 1962 design.
It’s DC. It’s either Winter or Summer. The flowers should look good during the sweltering humid Summer heat. (90 today for example)
