"Allen Iverson is one of the biggest reasons the NBA is not as popular as it once was" Somewhat disagree with that........many[damn near all] of the players just don't know how to play.....and the teams suck.....in general. That's a whole other thread though When the media was making him look like the mature 25 year old guy that had his life straight a couple seasons ago......people were rooting for him as the under-dog MVP going against the Lakers. Highest rated finals since the Jordan and the Bulls. It can't be all on the Lakers since they were there the last 3 times and Iverson once. Not blaming the media......can't blame the media if everything that has been claimed so far is true.....all on AI. The only reason I somewhat disagree with you, is because you have a very good point. The customers that have the money to buy season tickets, as well as individual tickets, probably just can't relate to "todays'" player. It's an issue that's been addressed several time on 610 Sports......for those that listen to the radio. Though, all-in-all...........winning cures all. "If 10 guys were in a room and Iverson started firing... 7 of them would be safe." One of the funniest things ever written.
I'm not sure what a possy is, partly because I've never had one, and partly because I don't know how to spell it, but you know, the group of guys that hang with Mr. Iverson. Otherwise known as the defendant to be.
RocksMillenium, If you think that John Thompson only allowed smart people to stay on his team, I have two words for you: Patrick Ewing.
The reason I think he's a punk is because he was convicted of maiming by mob
That conviction was overturned, and with good reason: it was a prosecutorial overreach of the first order. Virginia has a justice system roughly on a par with Texas and Florida: i.e., racist, draconian, and blithely unconcerned with due process.
The "maiming by mob" statute was enacted during Reconstruction and was intended as a tool against terrorist organizations like the KKK. There's no reason it couldn't be applied against a band of self-styled "gangstas", either. But the statute requires that the "mob" be assembled for the express purpose of maiming someone--otherwise, the state could apply it to any barroom brawl (what the Iverson incident essentially was).
Since the state didn't even argue, let alone prove, that Iverson and his buddies went to the bowling alley with criminal intent, the state court of appeals found that the statute didn't apply.
I should add that the court found Iverson's claim of total innocence to be unpersuasive as well, as several neutral witnesses, at least one of whom was black, contradicted the testimony of Iverson's friends that he threw no punches. But Iverson was guilty, at most, of simple assault and battery, not "maiming by mob".
PS: Here's a link to the opinion if you're dying of curiosity:
Virginia v Iverson
If they don't find a gun it will be Iversons word against this guys word...whaddya think? Charles Jones said Allen Iverson had a black handgun but did not brandish it. AP
