My sister (12yo at the time) got arrested from Jr High for bringing medicine to school and handing it out to her friends...... Of course, it was my father's migraine medicine she stole out of my parents bathroom; and it's a controlled substance....

I was surprised to find out that she got arrested from school for it, but then again, I wanted her to rot in jail for it too.... Makes me wonder if she had gone to jail or boot camp or something, would she have straightened up a bit?

What a stunning development in our progression towards a police state. It's very revealing that something most of us think of as a means of controlling dangerous criminals(handcuffs) is shown here to be considered by the police as a tool for harassment. They obviously can't do their job unless the person/child they are dealing with is completely under their power.

This reminds me of when the police zip-tied hundreds of kids in the K-Mart parking lot.

Thank goodness that the police are here to serve and protect....us from ourselves. It's bad enough that we can't choose what chemicals to put in our bodies - now we can't even walk with scissors(in school).

I bet if she had the "rounded" end scissors she would have been ok. It is those "sharp end" scissors that are the trouble makers!

I can't wait until they arrest someone for bringing a "sharp ended" PENCIL to school. I mean, a pencil is a weapon right? :(

No joke here, I remember a kid getting arrested who was around 9 or 10 years old a few years ago here for taking a chicken strip and pointing it like it was a gun.

Well it could have been worse, guys. The police could have either maced her or used tear gas instead of handcuffs.

Wow, and I mean wow - just when you think you have heard it all, something like this comes along...I am without speech here.

as I understand it, the law required the police to be notified and does not permit for school discretion on the matter but the girl was not required to be handcuffed and arrested. The police should have looked into the incident while they were at the school and just let the girl go.

Apparently, Philly has had a huge problem with kids of all ages bringing weapons to school and using things like scissors, small hand tools, and box cutters to threaten or hurt each other. Some of the highschools would avoid calling the police when kids were fighting with weapons so that the school wouldn't look bad. Parents were concerned that they couldn't get a clear picture of how dangerous a school was and were supportive of a law requiring all "weapons" to be reported to the police.

I suspect that if this was a little boy instead of a girl, people might be less upset. I'm reminded though of a girl who was briefly in my third grade class after being thrown out of several other public schools in the first month of school for doing things like throwing chairs at her teachers threatening other children. It doesn't sound like this girl was that bad but the story didn't give much detail.

I don't know what's sadder, that the cops actually handcuffed and arrested a little girl or that today's children are so unruly they can't be trusted and have to be banned from using mundane items like scissors.
