that's another question I have: How can you guys play online poker when it's impossible to read the other person/people? without that element, it would all just be odds and statistics, wouldn't it? I mean, I guess you might try to read another person based solely on their betting patterns, but I don't know of any other way online players could read other players.
there is some element, like insta calling, insta checking, insta raising etc. the poker tools also keep track of other info, like VP$IP, seen flop %'s, seen turn %'s aggresiveness, passiveness etc... you can generally get a decent generalization on each player. but yes, odds and statistics are far more relevant. which is why I believe online players are far superior to traditional live players.
Wow give this guy a break. I mean at least he is a father who spends some time with his kid. A lot of kids dont get to see their parents very much due to divorce/work/neglect. I salute you sir for taking your time to play a game with your daughter.
Thanks! Really - it's not like I'm twisting her arm. The kid can't get enough of it. If she wants to play Go Fish or Old Maid, I'm fine with that. She just seems to prefer poker.
No problem bro. And all these internet parents need to mind their own business. Its only poker. Its actually a very fun game and a useful thing to know how to do. I mean gambling addiction can come from slots which take no skill. Might as well teach something that can help with math skills as well as strategy and promote critical thinking.
Well, I'm not bothered much by others' opinions on this. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I've been wanting to learn Texas Hold 'em. My wife is not interested. My son is one-year-old and just wants to eat the cards. I don't have time to meet with buddies, and they probably wouldn't want to have to deal with newbie poker player like me anyway. Since my daughter was interested, I said, "why not?"
My grandfather used to always have HUGE games at his home when I was younger. I would ask to come to Houston just so I could sit on the stairs and watch all the old men play poker(few hundred thousand on the table at all times). Needless to say I learned how to play with big money from an early age(6 years old). Now I kind of regret even getting that knowledge because all I want to do is play poker for a living. While I still work and haven't made that complete jump yet, sometimes I wish I never learned how to play at all. But the money is good, but the grind of playing for money to support yourself takes a toll. I am 24 now, and don't really play as much so I can enjoy my 20's... once I turn 30, see you folks later, find me in the big games in Vegas!
both of my kids love to play poker. I started them with 5 card draw which is what I learned to play when I was a kid and just now is my 8 year old starting to play holdem. I think 5 card draw teaches the basics of the game better then it's easy to progress to holdem. she saw us playing omaha hi lo the other day and wanted to learn. I told her she had to wait for that one.
My son is your age with an 8 year old daughter and I'm just now learning to play. I have loaded a poker game and bought "Poker for Dummies"! It's great fun. The only negative I see is that it teaches you to hide your emotions which is not good for human relationships.
The other night I lost two back to back hands to the same player at an online table. I had a flush in spades with two spades and my hand and three showing. He had a bigger one both times. On back to back hands. Knocked me out of the tourney.
You fold..and fold and fold...pre flop.....you may lose some blinds but most of the time you are playing for free. DD
Yeah, but then, when you finally get dealt a hand you can work with, and if you win, you just re-coup your losses and break even. Is that enough to win?
The most important thing you can learn in Poker is patience.......that and betting styles etc...... Bluffing is the most overated skill in poker...you may win a few hands with it for a while but eventually you get blasted. DD
