Yeah, I think the Joe thing is great, honestly. If Joe clears $250k with his plumbing business: (a) I should go into plumbing, and (b) if his business makes that much profit, I think 39% versus 36% is a fair bump.

It's a worst-case scenario for Obama, with a guy who obviously supports McCain, has the gall to ask "do you believe in the American dream?" (when Obama is the one who worked his way from modest beginnings), and is allegedly exactly at the tax cutoff for Obama's plan.

But Obama sat and talked with the guy, saying "I may not get your vote, but I'll keep working for you."

I'm not sure the Joe thing is going to sway a lot of independents away from Obama in the end.

Not only that, but the 39% will only be taxed on the incremental amount above $250k. Everything from $1 to $250k will be taxed at 36%.

So now Joe the unlicensed plumber has become the centerpiece of the McCain campaign? Bwahahaha!

Seriously, I had my TV on mute on MSNBC and when I took it off mute, the first thing I hear was "Joe the plumber". I couldn't help but laugh. If you go by the focus groups, America doesn't like Joe the plumber.

A serious upgrade from Ayers! I like that Joe looks a bit like Mr. Clean.

Thank you for posting this - I thought I was the only person who understood this. I wish Obama would have explained this during the debate, but perhaps he's worried about seeming "wonky."

Let's continue the "guilty by association" theme of this campaign...

John McCain is using Joe the plumber as a centerpiece of his latest rallies...
Richard Nixon used the White House plumbers to stop leaks about the corruption of his presidency....

    Hmm...

A two men plumbing business doing 280K of business let alone profit is hell of a gig.

I found it interesting that he is upset because one day he might make 250k. I find that reasoning somewhat contorted.

I'm probably immature for chuckling at the term "two men plumbing business."

I find it baffling Obama didn't dispel the confusion stirred up by the McCain campaign about his proposed tax hike on small business netting $250K per year.

Is the difference between gross receipts and net income that difficult to clarify to the national audience as well as Joe the Plumber (whether or not he may be a Republican plant)? Obama could also have said out loud and clear that if someone is in plumbing business and he manages profit of $250K+ after all the expenses, the guy is indeed rich by consensus. Likewise, Obama could have explained in layman's term how progressive taxation doesn't really hurt small business at all.

Something tells me Obama isn't quite able to think on his feet, yet.
