Death metal? I think not, death metal sucks. just plain, old school heavy metal. nothing about killing people and raping their flaming skulls in any of the stuff I listen to.
LeGrouper, twhy's recommendation of the Smiths is a great one and I second that (look into getting "Louder Than Bombs" which has like 25 songs on it). However, I would include these Cure songs: "All Cats Are Grey" (from "Faith") "Jumping Someone Else's Train" (from "Boys Don't Cry") "Charlotte Sometimes" (from "Staring at the Sea" "A Forest" (from "Seventeen Seconds") "Plainsong" (from "Disintegration") "Pictures of You" (from "Disintegration") "The Kiss" (from "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me") "How Beautiful You Are" (from "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me") "Letter to Elise" (from "Wish") "Fight" (from "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me") "In Between Days" (from "The Head on the Door") This covers a wide variety of their different styles including gothic, happy, etc.
I third that Smith's are fantastic. My inspiration at my jam sessions are The Doors The Doors - Unknown Soldier The Doors - Roadhouse Blues The Doors - Love her Madly That song gets me started pretty well. Some other good inspirations for me are: Janis Joplin - Summertime Led Zeppelin - The Ocean Led Zeppelin - D'yer Maker Lou Reed - Perfect Day (Dig up his Velvet Underground stuff too) Jimi Hendrix - Fire Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter I think that's a wide range of sounds to find something interesting. Hope it helps.
I dont have the CD but my younger bro does. He seems to like it a lot because thats all he listened to until he discovered Shadows Fall.
Handful of Redemption and Energy is... There is also Poem by Taproot thats on MVP 2003. It's a good song
Manny and Bernie, thanks for the new contributions, I am downloading them right now. By the way though, the Smith's lead singer was Morrissey and that's what I was talking about earlier when I said I had been to 43 concerts and made a collage of the ticket stubbs. I grew up on a steady diet of the Smiths and Robert Smith over in England. It is kind of funny I know alot of Americans don't know the Smiths but in England if you didn't know who The Smiths were it would kind of be like not knowing who Pearl Jam was here.
Hey LeGrouper I got some more for you, just tell me when you get sick of it all. I'll break them down into categories. Punk- The Descendents, the whole Milo Goes to College CD Bad Religion- the whole 80-85 CD Smoother- The Microphones- PreAmp Soundtrack of our lives- Broken Imaginary Time, Sister Surround Some Lesser known Radiohead- Polyethelene 1&2, pearly The Decemberists- Cocoon Flaming Lips- Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots 1, 2, 3 The Microphones- Ice Super Furry Animals- (I won't suggest a song, I just say download a lot and find one you like) Spoon- the way we get by Smoothest- Ms. John Soda- Hiding Fading, Go Check Manitoba- Kid you'll move mountains etc. etc. etc. Can I just sing the praises of downloading for a bit, I mean I never would have been able to get into half these bands if I was stuck buying cd's; I am now sans high speed internet and so I have to go buy cd's at half price cd stores with shady indie kids who probably want to steal my identity and make it into a cool movie.
