I think that's an interesting question.

I happen to have immigrant parents from a developing economy, and what I can tell you is that, imho, this who vegetarian thing is a PURE CONSTRUCT OF DEVELOPED COUNTRIES. i.e. when you're poor, of if you've ever remotely experienced scarcity, you eat whatever you can get your hands on. There's no moralizing involved.

Besides which, and not to turn this thread into something even more controversial, but studies have linked higher intelligence to the breadth of one's dietary palette

No matter how you slice or dice it, your gf HAS made decided for herself that greens are the way to go. Whether she judges YOU NEGATIVELY under the same light is another story. There's no reason why each of you can't be positively happy with what you order from a menu w/o it being cast a negative thing on each other.

You didn't come out and say they are bad people but you did start out with this:

So you think vegetarianism, as a whole, is a "cleverly disguised philosophy"? Disguised for what into what? Cleverly as in intentional manipulation? That is what you are implying by your own language. Then you say it appears moralistic but when you think about it it is selfish. Again, you are speaking of vegetarianism as a whole in your language. You do not bring up your "friends" a few sentences later when talking about human rights (a flawed argument but we'll let it slide). So is a selfish person who is "cleverly disguising" their real philosophy a good person? Your tone suggests otherwise.

And yet you wonder why people took your comments as negative? Tat is so...interesting.

As I said, if I could go back and change some of the things I did say, I would, such as the "selfish" bull crap. It was a poor choice of words, and in retrospect doesn't really reflect what I really feel about vegetarianism. It was stupid, I know, I can admit that.

And I never said the word "friends", so I'm a little lost in that regard.

Yeah, you said all the ones you knew. That is why I put "friends" in quotation marks. Odd that you would get lost. Oh, never mind. Vegetarians are hypocrites. Curses!

This is just getting a little absurd for me. Let's just say that I said the wrong things. I'm out of this thread for good. It's obvious there's no way I'm swaying anyone in my favor.

    Apps,

you are in over your head. Do you not realize that the smartest ppl on this board next to thagary are rimbaud and Batman Jones.

I actually think you should feel honored they responded to you after me.

for the record: Batman Jones is completely telling the truth when he says he doesn't like to effect others when choosing a place to eat. I mean, I had to like go out of my way to convince him I wanted to eat at his favorite place when visiting in him. Look, he is right. All moral vegans are right, imo. That doesn't mean I can stop eating cows anymore than I can stop drinkiing beer either, when people make moral arguments about liquor.

Batman Jones once said to me...you really like bbq-ing. You should do it.

difference between you and rimbaud and BJ is they would never tell someone their moral cause is weak because their is another moral cause better. worst they would do is tell you your moral cause is flawed.

I’m surprised that you would call a vegetarian selfish. I would think that it’s the other way around. An average cow eats between 60 and 100 pounds of grain a day. Cows that are lactating will eat 100lbs of grain daily even though they only produce 5 gallons of milk a day. That is not very efficient. If we would give half of that grain to the impoverished countries, we would end world hunger. Unfortunately, that will never happen because we would rather over feed cattle so that we can enjoy a good steak and a Big Mac than to end world hunger. That to me is more selfish than someone not excepting a steak.

yeah, notice finalsbound hasn't responded to me suggesting the whole "I want a cat" conspiracy, by making moestavern19 take that over the pig and chicken....as a compromise.

Thats really nice of you to offer man, I appreciate your kindness. You're a swell guy.

BTW - We wanted to see the play tonight and were all ready to hit it up, but it was sold out. :( Next time we'll know to buy in advance I guess.

On a sadder note, I really ****ed up tonight, I just don't know why but I got angry at her and it led to a confrontation (albeit over the phone as I was driving home) I said so many stupid things just out of anger and ignorance. I love her more than anything, and I'm just not dealing with this very well for whatever reason (most likely my own insecurity)

I feel like such a douchebag, all she wants is for me to understand her positions on things and I'm just struggling with that right now.

Prayers would be accepted. I'm not doing well at the moment psychologically. :(

moes, it's all good. don't let it become more than it is.

I may have bad judgment when it comes to former Memphis Tigers, but I know a few human things. And the best relationships have people who can respect and hold a few different opinions. Just my 2 cents.

But it's uncomfy from time to time, and you have to get used to the idea that it's okay to have that kind of difference. I'd say you're a lot better off keeping a (relatively minor) difference like that than caving in just to be more comfy with it, or making a big deal out of it.

Also, while I agree with what Batman said about you two, from what I can tell anyway, I have to say it's hard for me to assess if it's good or bad for people to post about their repoir on a BBS, even this one. I wouldn't really do it, but I'm kind of old school, and old in general now, I guess.

Take it easy. Don't drive and talk serious. Bad bad.

I just feel like a tool because of my reluctance to accept this one.

I chalk it up to some of my basic insecurities, I've got self-esteem issues, I've got a lot of stuff working against me.

I mean there are things we don't see exactly eye to eye on politically, but that has never been an issue at all that caused even a hint of argument.

Tonight is going along fine, we are just trying to do the dinner and a movie thing. Hard Rock Cafe has an interesting Veggie Burger. I just got in a bad mood somewhere along the way and ended up snapping. She didn't even bring it up once either, it was all me just trying to discuss it with shouting.

    moestavern19,

how many days has she been away? do you or her have winter or holiday anxiety? do you still miss your grandfather who passed away this year?

sounds like you were alone without shan for a few days. arguments suck...really bad. I used to stress about them for way longer than girls do. I don't know where I'm going with this...except to remind you that shan loves you and many people stress out right before xmas.

now if I can just remember this, as well.

Could be a combo of those things.

I've been extremely depressed since my granddad died. Then I started going back to school and that just piled up the stress. Compound that with trying to start a diet, workout, not eat so much crap, now we've been apart for a few days, She's back home and can't deal with her parents and their weird behavior, plus there is Holiday stress involved.

    Ugh.

I'm just mentally spent at this point.

Call her now. Say you're sorry and you love her and you don't care about anything else but that. That's true, right? If it is, it'll work out. If it isn't, it won't.

I eat steak before every basketball game, I always feel great out there on the court.................It is wierd because I do not feel the same way if I eat anything else......

If you vegetarians were stranded on an island with your family, and you saw a huge animal that could feed you for weeks, otherwise you starve, would you kill it, gut it, and eat it?

"These" type of Vegetarians/PetaMembers astonish me to no end......

Why do people always try to go to this silly argument? Hey, if you were in a dark alley and some guy with a gun came out, gave you a gun and said "I am going to shoot you after I count to five" would you shoot him by the time he said "four"?

If you were stranded on a frozen mountaintop after a plane crash and you had no food but there were dead bodies all around and you had to eat them to survive...would you do it?

moes - stop being an idiot and trying to "challenge" her with your insecurities. It is immature and destructive. Show some will power and self-control and check yourself before you wreck yourself with your mouth. You are young enough to be able to do so now but if you wait it only becomes all the more difficult when you are older.

blathersby sad/pathetic. He still misses his girl. Even if she had become a militant, vegetarian, femme-nazi, dallas cowgirl, utah jazzhand fan.

    blathersby has no sympathy.

I'm not a vegetarian, but if I was, I'd look at it this way...

For a huge animal like that to survive, it has to feed on something. If it's carnivorous, it survives (at least somewhere down the chain) on something that eats plants. The ONLY way for it to not would be if it feeds on seaweeds and fish. And that's so incredibly unlikely that it's not worth mentioning.

So what would I do? Stalk the animal. Find out what it eats. Take inventory of the island. Discover all the edible plants this creature feeds off. Harvest seeds from them and plant them. You have a ready source of food that's been keeping these large animals surviving, and you've planted enough seeds for the next year. Meat-free.

    It's just not as tasty.
