Agree with Archer, Frisky Dingo, and Sealab, seen all of em, love em. Also love Dr. Katz Anyone watch Venture Bros? Supposed to be hilarious...
Another Battlestar Galactica recommend. It's pretty damn good, has plenty of eye candy (sharon valeri ftw), and the story is well written. I just can't wait till Blood and Chrome comes out. I hope it's as good as BSG. Oh, and no one recommended Eastbound and down? That show is pretty hilarious.
"Mad Men" is great, if you enjoy character and dialogue-driven drama (i.e. - very little "action" per se), and you're fascinated by the late 50s-early 60s time period (which I am). Jon Hamm and John Slattery are amazingly good, and of course, there's this: Spoiler
Community is a great comedy! Watch it from episode one and, you'll get hooked. Also "How I met your mother" is another good comedy that you should look into.
Yes it's that good. And I don't really care for 30 Rock, I think it mainly gets attention because of Fei and Baldwin whereas this show started out with a bunch of unknowns. And don't let the premise deter you, it's not what makes the show so interesting or what drives the story. This show is all about its rich characters. Don Draper is the probably the best lead on TV now.
If you want real tv shows. Download them. All the newer shows today all suck. The X-Files Star Trek The Next Generation LEXX(similar to Farscape) Firefly Quantum Leap Xena Hercules Battlestar Galactica Six Feet Under
Mad Men is outstanding. Pay no attention to LTF, who's made me question his sanity (ha ha!). Battlestar Galactica is really good, but be sure you're watching the remake of the series, with Edward James Olmos, and start with season one. Are you a political junkie, like me? If you are, or simply love a good story and good acting, try The West Wing. The first season of Two and a Half Men is hilarious, but you can skip the rest of the series. They recycle the same plot over and over and over again (then they do it again!). Curb Your Enthusiasm is great TV, but can be an acquired taste for some folks. Since I mentioned that, I'm just going to assume you've seen the best comedy series ever, Seinfeld. A great series that's often overlooked these days? The Larry Sanders Show. Watch season one and you'll be hooked. Besides Curb, HBO and Showtime both have numerous excellent offerings, most already mentioned. They're so good that I don't watch much network TV any longer. Firefly is a great fix for the SF fan (I should know!).
I'm a big fan of the shows the OP mentioned (Twin Peaks, Firefly, AD, Dexter, Breaking Bad). I rank Deadwood slightly ahead of The Wire, but both are great. Two that haven't been mentioned that I would recommend: If you like Twin Peaks, the first season of Veronica Mars is imho the best of any show. A terrific murder mystery. You might take a look at some good British shows, Horatio Hornblower and Sharpe , Black Adder, Sherlock are all great. <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/JRx90mOXS7Q" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
That's another one I recently bought on sale, but have yet to watch...it's just sitting on my shelf. So much to watch, so little time! Ugh! What to watch next??? Pugs
Haha Deckard -- most of the people who enjoy Mad Men have listed nostalgia as one of the reasons. Of course the fan who got hooked on the Rockets in the San Diego days would enjoy it more than me! But I stand by what I said -- perhaps it is just because I prefer dramas/actions to whatever the heck Mad Men is. I guess it would be considered a drama, but I've just never been drawn in by the plot line. That said, I do deserve to be negative repped for forgetting about Always Sunny in Philadelphia. That should be at the top of everyone's list of TV comedies.
I've had friends talk up The Big Bang Theory for a long time. I finally went out and bought the first season, yep way behind, I gotta say I was highly disappointed.
Big Bang lives and dies by Sheldon Cooper. I couldn't get into the Office because Michael Scott raises my blood pressure... Parks and Rec doesn't have that problem. Community and Modern Family are the two new best comedies. 30 Rock is also on my watch list, but it's love it or hate it. So much going on and the delivery is so quick, it'll fly by you if you're not paying attention. Watched the first season of Wire. Pacing starts slow and deliberate, but once it hits critical mass mid season, it's like you're making the discovery along with the characters. And the dialogue is one where you can't multitask and more engaging than most other shows. Will depress you. Mad Men also has slow and deliberate pacing, but it's because the detail that goes into the writing is well crafted. If you don't like the 50's universe or have any inclination to think of context or allusions to the present day, all of it might fly over your head. Still a great drama despite all of that. There's just so many parts working on that show that click. BSG got caught up in its own hype during the last season. Kinda like Lost, but unlike lost, it tied up a bulk of their loose threads. I was okay with the ending, not blown away by it , but the writers deserve credit for wrapping everything up. Most sci-fi shows leave everything half cocked, whether it's because of unexpected cancellation or horrible planning (Xfiles, Lost). I watched Lost by watching it at 1.3x speed. Actors talked like chipmunks, but didn't miss much detail. Season 1-3 are awesome. Too bad they didn't resolve crap, but the experience and the characters alone are deep enough to warrant final disappointment. Just be glad you can watch all eps within a month instead of 7 years. Makes all the difference...
