So what's going on here - not really paying enough attention -- could I use a PS3 as a full-time home computer or is Sony just blowing smoke?

A current top of the line Vaio is 2000+ and won't support blu-ray yet -- personally I think Vaios are great computers [Mac-like]. A PS3 @ $600 that supports blu-ray and could be serious home computer would be an incredible deal. Probably too good to be true I guess...

Here's the best comparison I can think of:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps2_linux

Now imagine that instead of being just an add-on, this feature will be included in every PS3 sold. You tell me if you can consider that a full-time home computer.

They're only pushing it as a computer to get around that nasty 17.5% VAT that the Brits pay for video game consoles. Computers are exempt from the VAT, and would lower PS3's UK price by a significant margin if they could convince the British regulators that it's actually a computer. They tried to do this with PS2 even going so far to have a Linux based PS2, but the courts recently ruled against them.

is the hard-drive also blue-ray, or just the dics drive?

...if the hard-drive is not blue-ray, then why can't we use off-brand hard-drives?

Yeah, that's certainly one of the main reasons for them to push the computer aspect. I think since the PS3 will actually have Linux installed on every system, they might have a better shot, at least compared to the PS2 (which only had Linux as an add-on a couple years into the PS2's life). Maybe not. At least we're kind of benefiting from them trying to avoid those extra charges.

A hard drive isn't based on optical disc technology (no CD/DVD/Blu-ray/HD-DVD hard drive).

Now the PS3 HDD might still have some sort of unique features that force people to buy PS3-only hard drives. I believe both the PS2 HDD and the 360 HDD are basic HDDs, but they have special connections that make it impossible to switch them out with normal HDDs. If the PS3 is truly a computer, then ideally you'd be able to replace the HDD with any one that you have or one that you can buy off Newegg. You'd still have to make sure to get one that meets the standards (SATA, 2.5", etc.), but you'd still end up being able to get any HDD you want for the most part.

As I said earlier, I think that is probably just wishful thinking. I'm not sure why Sony would give away an opportunity to makes some extra money selling PS3 HDDs, especially since they should be very important during the next 5-10 years.

Anyone know if the PS3 is IPOD/MP3 player compatible like the Xbox? I dont even have an IPOD but it sounds cool.

I like to play games while sitting in my recliner at home an after sitting in front of a cpu at work for 8 hours. I want them separate.

    Go Wii!

They haven't really commented much on this. It shouldn't be that difficult to do, but Sony might not want to offer the same support. At the very least, I would hope for some sort of connectivity between the PSP and PS3, allowing you to stream/transfer media from the PS3 to the PSP (and vice versa).

I'm not sure what to expect to be honest. There are a lot of things unknown about the PS3 at this point in time, especially compared to the 360 IIRC. We haven't even seen the online model in action, let alone what type of devices the PS3 will support.
