So what does that mean? How are these specs different from the current 60gb? I was | | close from going through with the Amazon deal and at the end decided to sleep on it.
Do not buy a ps3 right now. I'd wait until November. Supposedly the stripped down version does not have backwards compatibility to further reduce costs... 40gb hd, ect. But if you like backwards compatibility...then buy one now. rumored price range is anywhere from 349 to $449
A reduced cost 40gb for about $349 to $449? Isn't that more expensive than the 60gb and 7 blu-ray for $499 (tax and shipping included)? What I want to know is why they have all these movie rebates for the PS3 and Amazon added two more making it 7 movies. Does Amazon, CC, and other retailers know something we don't? What incentive would Sony have to reimburse Amazon for the extra movies? There's something really weird going on. Alot of these deals are expiring soon, so what's going to happen after they end? Hmmm... I hope Sony doesn't pull a fast one.
Hey RC, Appreciate the email. I was an Xbox head before this so the PS2 playback isn't that important to me (although it'd be nice to have ). It's weird cause I never owned a playstation but the Blu-ray capability really intrigues me. I've been contemplating for a while which system to get (I will be getting one), and was stuck between the Wii and the PS3. The Wii would be nice when you have friends over, particularly girls. It'd be something to do hanging out over a few drinks. I could see how easily I could use the Wii to my advantage . Aside from that, I don't have a standard DVD player, much less a Blu-ray player so I was strongly considering the PS3. It's less interactive and not something to play with the ladies but then again it would look REAL NICE with my new 1080p Sony Bravia. And then I couldn't decide to get the Xbox360 or the PS3, given the price and lack of games and Online community. However I've concluded that the PS3 is a better value, considering it comes free with Wifi and Blu-ray, when with the 360 its an add-on. I think at this point I'd take the PS3 over the Xbox360 and hope eventually some games will come out. Meanwhile I can enjoy a couple sports game and admire at the porousness of Lawrence Fishburne's skin. So let's hope the decision going Blu-ray over HD-DVD is the right one. I'd like to get a system in time for NBA2K8, but I've been holding out on getting the system for a long time as it is so I wouldn't mind waiting longer if something better's coming out. So right now, I'm still waiting .
Yeah, this is basically what I was talking about 2 weeks ago in this thread (not sure why Engadget barely found out about it). Their reasoning for some things are a little off though IMO. As I mentioned earlier, a new model number does not necessarily represent a new SKU. It could be something changed internally (for example, the 60GB PS3 in Europe was a different model than the 60GB PS3 in US and Japan...the Japanese and US models might have even been different now that I think about it). A new color could also signal a new model. Not saying it isn't a new SKU (I think that is the likely scenario), but some people are jumping the gun a bit I think. The 7 free Blu-ray movies are a special offer, not the normal packaging that comes with the PS3. Theoretically, if a 40GB PS3 went on sale tomorrow at a MSRP of say $399, it could possibly include an offer for 7 Blu-ray movies as well (or at least 5 anyway). Chances are that if a new SKU were planned, once it hit retail shelves, that offer will probably be over (I think the 5 free movie deal ends either this month or next month). The movie rebates are valid for all Blu-ray players (including the PS3 of course). It is basically a promotion being supported by all the Blu-ray supporters (Sony, Disney, Fox, Panasonic, etc.). There are similar offers for HD DVD, and there will probably be more in the future (although maybe not of the same magnitude). Amazon is just adding on 2 movies on their own (maybe with incentives from Sony too) to sweeten the deal. I'm sure they would like more people to do their shopping there. Pretty normal behavior from retailers during the holiday season. I would like to add that Sony does attempt to put out some party games for the casual audience, although it certainly doesn't quite compare to what the Wii offers. Something like Singstar (karaoke), Buzz! (kind of like a quiz show), and the Eyetoy games could be pretty nice entertainment when friends are over. Sony's never really pushed these brands outside of Europe (though they will with the PS3), so not many people here know about them, despite their popularity in Europe. Of course, you could throw in 3rd party games, like Rock Band or Guitar Hero 3, to the mix as well.
The 5 free Blu-ray movie deal has been updated (now valid from October through the end of January I believe...think it has a different selection of movies too). They list valid player models for each player, one of which is the new PS3 model being talked about (CECHG01). Guess that means we should know what it is before 1/31/08 (might even find out by next week or so). Also, I think Sony requested that the FCC replace some of the test information given for their new model (the info indicating a different number of USB ports, etc.), since the original reports contained confidential information.
Wow amazing they finally realized that the bottom line is MONEY!!! and that not everyone has 700 dollars to throw around playing video games.. I mean it has to show when your PS2 is outselling your PS3 lol
