There is something that I dont quite understand. We have the exact same record as the Spurs, our season series is tied at 2-2, yet they have the third spot and we have the fifth I was under the assumption that the tie breaker in this situation would be conference records. Our conf. record is better than them by a game. Is there something I am missing? Thanks in advance for the help
If you're in the same division, the first tiebreaker is division record. San Antonio has a better division record than we do. I think they're 10-6 and we're 8-8.
http://sportsline.com/nba/story/7164305 Playoff Tiebreaker explanation SportsLine.com staff The following is an explanation of NBA tiebreaking scenarios. Determining Ties for Playoff Position In order to break a tie for playoff positions, if one exists at the end of the regular season, the following criteria will be utilized in the order set forth: TWO-WAY TIES 1. Results of games against each other. 2. Better winning percentage within own division (only if tied teams are in same division). 3. Better winning percentage against teams in own conference. 4. Better winning percentage against playoff opponents in own conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position). 5. Better winning percentage against playoff opponents in opposite conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position). 6. Better point differential between offense and defense. MORE THAN TWO TEAMS TIED 1. If applicable, division champions must be determined first. 2. Better winning percentage in all games among the tied teams. 3. Better winning percentage against teams in own division (only if all tied teams are in same division). 4. Better winning percentage against teams in own conference. 5. Better winning percentage against teams eligible for playoffs in own conference (including team that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position). 6. Best point differential between offense and defense. Note: If a multiple team tie is reduced to a two-team tie at any point using the above criteria, the two-team tie will be resolved in accordance with the existing two-team tie procedure.
Thank you. I think record against the entire conference should have more emphasis. Especially if you're going to have situations where ties are inevitable playing 4 games against each division opponent. Why not 3, or 5?

glad you could get your childish jab in to make you feel clever enough to carry on with the rest of your day.......
Check out the magic number thread. You had a great question, but all the information you are looking for is in that thread. It's not childish, the guy just doesn't think two threads on the same topic helps clutchfans. I agree.
honestly, it's not even the multiple threads on the same topic, its the fact that people havent figured out the tie-breaker rules and keep asking why we are tied with San Antonio and have a better Conference record, that or why we are a better team than Utah , but currently have the lower seed. regardless, there will be more threads on the subject without fail, unless we win out
If that surprised you, then what you would say when you see a poster that joined the board on 1999 asking 'So the home court goes by record not seeding?'.
Why is there not already a damn sticky for all playoff seeding related questions? Mods, are you reading this?
