And 1 a while ago ran some ads challenging some of the NBA's elite to play against current playground legends in streetball. I think it would be one hell of a show but i realize alot of these nba players are afraid because of getting injured and rules in their contracts about them not playin in things like that but if it did go down who do you think would win?

As much as I love street ballahs... they would have no chance against a team of NBA players...imagine a street ballah tryin' to contain Shaq...i'm sure they would be able to pull some moves on the NBAers, but the NBA would come out the winners

Are you joking? If it's basketball, it won't even be close - NBA. If the rules are "No autopsy, no foul" - that's NOT basketball so who cares.

A few years ago, there was a beer commercial demonstrating "Full-contact Golf" - I would not become a fan of that sport either.

The true beauty of basketball is that it is a TEAM sport. I appreciate athleticism and many street ballers are probably close in that aspect of the game. But if the game degenerates to endless sequences of 1-on-1's it (IMHO) gets real boring, real fast.

Basketball has grown from obscurity to arguably the #1 spectator sport in the world. If it were pure athleticism alone that drove that appeal, NBA players would rank behind Track & Field athletes in salaries. Track & Field is almost entirely 1 against 1.

And another thing is alot of the Star NBA players play street ball so it won't be anything new to them. Just imagine some guys on the street trying to stop a backcourt
that has Francis and Iverson [IMG] they would get murdered.

If there is a street player out there that has the ability to hang in there against big NBA players such as Shaq, Duncan etc, don't you think he would already be in the NBA?

    Look at this list:

    Thomas Hamilton
    C Dudley
    Shawn of the Mavs
    Big Country
    Geiger
    Tabak
    etc

If you can discover a signable big man (street player) with more talent than players such as the above, bring him to Rudy's attention.

Suppose he has a few brushes with the legal system in his past, no problem.
Hamilton has a record and the Mavs put up with all types of foolishness from Roy T because he was a talented big man.

I think there are several street ballers with as good and better one-on-one and basketball skills as NBA players. Gary Payton has said it, Steve Francis has felt it, and several local leagues often showcase "unstoppable" players who light up NBA players (again, one-on-one and playground style). Like others have said, it's the "team aspect" that the street ballers will get drilled on. Street ball is more about showmanship and pure entertainment anyway.

I think that depends on the players. If you put guys out there from the NBA who are used to playing street ball, then the NBA guys will ultimately be better. If you put bad NBA players and guys who have no knowledge of unorganized basketball, than the street guys would have a definitive edge.

    The answer: it depends.

This thread is downright silly. The NBA showcases the best basketball players in the world.

The 5 worst NBA position players will beat the 5 best streetball players every time.

I like pointing this out repeatedly, so forgive me, but Payton has said that he was not even the best in his neighborhood, muchless the city.

I'll disagree with this. I have nothing to base my opinion on, but I know there are some duds in the league that would get schooled by similar-position-players on the street. Matt Maloney comes to mind. [IMG]

I once saw Doug Lee (drafted 2nd round out of Purdue if I recall) get destroyed in pickup games. Of course he didn't stick around in the league, but hey, he was drafted into the NBA.

The place where I would think the NBA would dominate would be big men. But when I see people light up Moochie, Steve, and about 3 other NBA players for 60+ points in summer leagues, I say at least some of these guys can hang.

i agree the streetballers would be at a disadvantage as far as height goes at the 4 and 5 spot but in streetball the 4 and 5 arent the most important positions. They dont run a set offense they just try to embarass you everytime and yes their are a ton of street ballers that were as good are better than nba players but just didnt get the chance to showcase their talents. As far as guards go they can easily match the nba players.Their was a local legend in the kenner summer league in Dc who dropped 65 on moochie and francis so dont tell me some of these guys cant hang

dr of dunk, ive heard that somewhere also but i think he was more trying to emphasize how good street ballers are, because jason kidd said that gary was one of the best or best in oakland.

has anyone ever watched the movie "the Goat" ita about earl "the goat" Mantigoat. he was the biggest street ball legend ever, and he came out of NY. in interviews with the NBA elite of the70s and 80s, they all say that the best player they have ever seen was the goat. and im talkin that Karim said this. there are obviously street ballers with NBA skills. it is well publicised that francis is a street bvaller. and he made the NBA. and iverson, hell, do you think Lamar Odom was a good student. he learned everything he needed to know in Jamaica Queens. most of the Nba stars these days have spent alot of their time polishing their skills in the street. i think the nba has already taken the best of the street players, and made them their own. the NBA would win by 40.

Sorry, but there are guys on the street who would make Francis and Iverson their b*tches.

Uh huh. The 5 worst players in the NBA are specialists and are only in the NBA because they can feed off of other players. They wouldn't even score a basket against the playground's finest.

And that reason is that for whatever reason NBA players got the chance that some guys didn't.

Think back to when the Rockets played Milwaukee this season. Remember their backup guard, Rafer Alston? The guy looked like an absolute scrub. Turnovers, missed shots, fundamental mistake after mistake. Hard to believe but that same kid was one of the meanest playground ballers during his Fresno days. If I can remember correctly, he abused Allen Iverson in a playground one-on-one game. My point is that the NBA game takes alot more than athleticism and talent. That's why I sit back and laugh when I read thread's like "James White" with people peeing in their pants over playground hoopers. Put NBA players on the playground and they will get abused, but the NBA hardwood is very different.

Bottom line: The most talented basketball players are on the street, but the best basketball players are in the NBA.

I have to agree with Voice. Alot of the great NBA players of today grew up playing street ball. If street ballers can't play then why would the NBA stars of today begoing out of their way to play in the same tournaments as the street ballers. These street ballers have seriouse skills. Those that have the ability to play as a team and individauly ARE playing in the NBA.

I think street ballers have the physical tools. I think if it was on the streets the game may be close. In a structured game, no contest, nba by 30, at least.

I don't agree with the argument that the 4 and 5 spot wouldn't be important. The nba team would have a 7 footer that the street ballers couldn't stop.

    NBA lineup :

    Shaq
    Garnett
    Grant HIll
    Kobe Bryant
    Gary Payton
I doubt there are 5 guys from the streets who could beat this team.

btw, didn't stevie drop 60+ in a summer league on someone ?

    uhhmm, NBA *ALL STARS*

    vs

    "playground" players?

The people who make the bucks make it for a reason.

    STARS, by a mile.

oh, btw, what the hell are "streetball rules"? A degeneration of what bball is supposed to be?
