Smart teams are also starting to look two or three years down the road before signing players to expensive contracts. The Clippers may presently have the lowest payroll in the league, but they also had seven players this season who were playing on rookie contracts. All were high first round draft picks and will be looking for big pay days when they complete their rookie contracts. If the Clippers were to give Olowokandi, Brand, Odom and Miles maximum contracts (as no doubt their agents will demand), while giving Magette, Dooling and Richardson contracts in the $6-7 million range, they would quickly have a payroll over $60 million. So the Clippers can't just look at Olowokandi's contract this summer as an isolated negotiation. They have to think about what they're going to have to pay out next summer and the summer after that. The Clippers are an extreme example, but all the teams in the league with young, budding superstars now have to look to the time when these players complete their rookie contracts and ask for maximum contracts. Phoenix is already committed to contracts for the next two seasons that will bring it dangerously close to the Luxury Tax. However, in the summer of 2003, Shawn Marion becomes a restricted free agent and will undoubtedly be asking for a maximum contract. The Suns have to keep that in mind as they rework their roster this summer. http://www.realgm.com/src_gm_articles.php?artid=managing
A little closer look aelliott........a post from their forum. http://basketball.fanhome.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=1023228 These are the new numbers that I think make more sense: Lamar Odom - $10 mil Elton Brand - $10 mil Michael Olowokandi - $10 mil Darius Miles - $10 mil Quentin Richardson - $5.6 mil Marko Jaric - $3.5 mil Nickoloz Tskitshvili - $2.5 mil (if he's available) Eric Piatkowski - $1 mil Sean Rooks - $1 mil Obinna Ekezie - $500,000 Harold Jamison - $500,000 Tremaine Fowlkes - $500,000 Earl Boykins - $500,000 Clippers salary cap is $55.6 mil 1) The Clippers are $2.6 mil over luxury tax. 2) The Clippers lose Corey Maggette, Keyon Dooling, and #12 pick (which they can easily keep) 3) As the salaries get bigger, the Clippers have to dump players like Marko Jaric and Nickoloz Tskitshvili or go well over the salary cap.
You got that right, with a capital R. Also throw in not resigning Willis and Williams. We have too have some 8 - 12 players so that means keeping some other questionable fodder, but it's unproven and young - all the much better. As I spoke before "Lean, mean, young and tall. Go abroad, not once, but twice". "Look Yao below, it's now a Rockets Show", prophesy me.
<i>A little closer look aelliott........a post from their forum. http://basketball.fanhome.com/forum...hreadid=1023228 These are the new numbers that I think make more sense: Lamar Odom - $10 mil Elton Brand - $10 mil Michael Olowokandi - $10 mil Darius Miles - $10 mil Quentin Richardson - $5.6 mil Marko Jaric - $3.5 mil Nickoloz Tskitshvili - $2.5 mil (if he's available) Eric Piatkowski - $1 mil Sean Rooks - $1 mil Obinna Ekezie - $500,000 Harold Jamison - $500,000 Tremaine Fowlkes - $500,000 Earl Boykins - $500,000 Clippers salary cap is $55.6 mil 1) The Clippers are $2.6 mil over luxury tax. 2) The Clippers lose Corey Maggette, Keyon Dooling, and #12 pick (which they can easily keep) 3) As the salaries get bigger, the Clippers have to dump players like Marko Jaric and Nickoloz Tskitshvili or go well over the salary cap. </i> That post is somebody's suggestion on what types of deals the Clippers should sign with their soon-to-be free agents. Those aren't the current numbers. Odom, Kandi, Miles, Richardson and Brand are all on rookie scale contract, just like Steve Francis. Odom made $2.8M last year, not $10M. Even if Odom, Kandi and Brand are resigned next year for max deals, the CBA would still prohibit them from making $10M/year. Another clue as to the fact that those are not real numbers is the fact that Corey Maggette isn't shown at all. The Clippers were the only team more than $1M BELOW the cap at the conclustion of the season. They are no where near the luxury tax. Current salary numbers are what would have to be used for trades. Those number's that you quoted are somebody's fantasy numbers.
<i>Correct if they were resigned as free agents..</I> Assuming we are talking about the present then those numbers are completely inaccurate. If you're talking about what the Clipper payroll might be in two years, then it's just speculation and has nothing whatsoever to do with the context of this thread.
OK guys, you can stop guessing about what Rocket!!! is trying to tell us. I think he told us in the TroyBaros thread on 5/25. http://bbs.clutchcity.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34126 This certainly flys in the face of Occam's Razor. Time will tell.
Except if they were manuevering for the next two yrs so they wouldn't be taxed for being over the cap........so they may be willing to trade off some players for picks and filler......
I think it would be overkill because if they are trading a player, it is definitely going to be Odom.
Did I miss something ... I dont think anyone expects that return for the #1 pick ... if they do they they are in for an ugly surprise ...
Well I have read it now ... ... Actually I think you misread Rocket!!!'s trade idea ... his suggestion was something like #1 + #15 + contracts for Curry + Kandi + Brand + Battier + Swift + #4 ... I sort of belive that this was an ironic response to some of the earlier pipe-dreams in that thead though ... if not ...
aelliott - I have some different salaries for the Clipps. Rather than confuse things here, I will e-mail them shortly.
Ummmm...... Remember the comment about curve balls guys???? Bay Rock...try sarcasm for Troy, we miss him so! FYI, Kandi cannot be traded (mistaken by EVERYBODY before the trade was on the table). I think credit goes to aelliott for that correction, if I am right...thank you, sir. Your post helped considerably. Jeeezzzzzzzz!!! Actually, this is a very easy trade and Occam's Razor is out the window. As I said, "Ask Doc, that is why he is so nervous." Again, the trades are easy, but Doc's razor just isn't cutting it! Doc, any new news or reply???? Can you reconfirm your thread or are you now hearing similar 411 to this??? The message is the same, it just keeps getting louder. GATOR, I knew there was a reason I liked you so much! Pretty smart guy that Gator. Close , but....... Keep digging. Oh, and to who ever said this... "Krause must be Yoda." Krausse will NEVER, repeat NEVER be f**king Yoda! What an insult! To the character, I mean! One has knowledge, the other, weeeeeeeelllllllllll....... The Yoda reference referred to the second trade. Reread the post. Guys, This is supposed to be fun. I gave you this for your enjoyment. W-o-K has the right attitude. I can't tell you everything right now. Hell, either party could pull back at any time. "Nothing is written, We write our own future!" Trades fall through every day, but this is about as close to sure as I have seen in a long time, at least this early in the game. But, then again...... Not a clue, but can anyone name the quote above. It may not be exact, but it is pretty close. Great flick! Again, it is NOT a clue. Just fun! To all, For those that do not recognize this yet, word is JW is ALL THAT! At least, that is what several teams believe and are willing to give the farm for. EEESH! Nice grammar ROCKET!!! Pretty soon it will be..... "Would you like some fries with that?" (NOTE: Only to be said in a hillbilly accent) Clutch, are you there? What's up! Are you enjoying this as much as I am. What a great day for us! The heavens surely opened up and smiled on us with these turn of events. Boy am I ready to hear Gene say, "How sweet it is!" again and REALLY mean it throughout the season.
ROCKET!!! - I can not tell a lie...it was I making the Krause = Yoda connection. It had nothing to do with Krause's level of intellect or his personality...I just think Krause's face has alien features...and I won't even comment on his body... So if you'll accept the apology, I will continue to have fun in the "rumor factory"!
so, Rocket!!!!. . . could Jerry West be Yoda? I think Jerry West could be Yoda. what other NBA GM could be Yoda?
