I lived in Baytown during Alicia, also. Lived in Whispering Pines. Was starting at Cedar Bayou, but school was postponed for a couple of weeks, so we stayed at the Galleria. Small world.
Anyway? Winding Way? Circle Way? His Way? I grew up there... B-Wood '91... my dad is heading up here to Plano, btw.
It's just hard to figure out what to do. Would it be stupid to evacuate if you're not near the water? This thing keeps sounding worse and worse.
My company is putting us up in a hotel in San Antonio. My wife and kids will have fun but I'll have to work. Moved everything loose off front porch and back patio. I hate leaving my home
Are those of you even on the west or northwest side of town still planning on boarding up windows? I don't even know where to buy wood at this point!
I remember. I filled the bathtub up and the day after Alicia I still had water and wanted to take a shower so I emptied it. Hours later I lost water for a week. Let my hard, stinky lesson be a lesson to the rest of you - Just because you have water when it's over doesn't mean that you will continue to have water.
I'm in Spring and I'm packing up to leave tomorrow morning. There are a couple of trees by my house that I do not trust. I don't know where I'm going. I don't know if I will be able to find a motel and if I did, I doubt I would be able to sneak 6 cats in. Anyone have an idea as to which direction to go to escape the rain all together?
just found out something interesting, and for all of you that are going to a hotel somewhere else, please read this: A few days ago, I went ahead and reserved a room in Austin .......called to confirm today and the lady at the front desk said there is a high probability that guests who are scheduled to check out when we check in will physically refuse to leave and that there is nothing they can do to make them leave ...so there is a good possibility that when I get to Austin, Ill have no room and no place to stay I called another hotel, and they said the same thing ...that they expect many guests who are scheduled to check out, to refuse to leave this sucks
Do ya'll think The Woodlands will lose power for any extended amount of time? That's where my wife wants to go since her parents don't really want to leave. I think we should just go on and leave since we have family/friends to stay with in safer towns and I just really don't see the point in staying when you really don't know what's going to happen. Chances are, once the storm reaches The Woodlands, it will have diminished in strength, but I really don't want to sit without power and air conditioning for any extended amount of time. Not to mention, a tree at her parents' house collapsed not too long ago and destroyed a brick wall. And that definitely wasn't during a hurricane.
The Woodlands will lose power. If this thing goes over as a Cat 4, we'll have hurricane force winds as far north as Conroe. If it goes over as Cat 5, those winds will be even stronger. I just can't believe it's already a Cat 4. The forecasters were so tremendously wrong on intensity. I mean, really wrong. And they're reasoning seems absolutely silly now. I'm getting out. Going to visit cousins in Dallas for the weekend. I flirted with the idea of staying, because a part of me really wants to. But with little kids...I just can't chance it. I think we're leaving tomorrow sometime. My brother and his family...my sister and her family..and my parents all live out on the west side and in Katy. They're all leaving. My brother to Florida. Everyone else to Dallas. What you all need to understand is the real threats to most of Houston are super high winds and tornados, which spawn off like crazy from these storms...particularly ones with this much intensity. Sitting in a house while 110 mph winds fly by ain't the smartest thing in the world. THIS IS NOT ALICIA. Don't be complacent about that. Highest recorded winds on land were 96 mph in Alicia. They will far exceed that if this thing comes onshore as a Cat 4 or greater.
Dr. Neil said the hurricane force winds should only be present up into I-10 and then diminish from there.
In The Woodlands, you are likely to get tropical storm force winds. About the power, I've heard from people in Huntsville that the power went out during Alicia and the winds weren't nearly as high as they are projected to be with Rita. I would plan to lose power but hope for the best.
Jeff/Madmax, What do yall think the conditions would be like in Katy should the predictions come true, as far as the path of this thing? I have an offer to stay at my brothers house in katy, but its looking like the eastern eye might pass right over that area .............
depends where it hits. if at matagorda, you're right. if at galveston or even freeport...then hurricane winds would extend to Conroe. and again...that's SUSTAINED WINDS. with gusts well over hurricane force. you're not keeping electricity with that type of a situation.
i live in west houston...i'm getting out. my brother's family lives in Katy..they're leaving tonight. my sister's family lives in west houston...they're getting out. my parents live just down the street...they're leaving as well.
Okay...I live in far Northwest Houston (290 and Highway 6) ....I thought I'd be okay but now it's heading for West Houston????
i'm really worried about my windows getting blown out.. as an apartment renter in the med center i really cant do anything to board them up..
