That's absolutely true. But, we're more respectful about it. We don't go out of our way to act on our prejudices like Europeans. Our history at least let let us empathize with the racially discriminated. Just as you can hate your enemies, you can also respect them at the same time. People deserve that much just from the virtual of being good human beings.

 

I think people are going a little overboard generalizing from the boneheaded choice of a fast food manager to the prevailing cultural winds of all of Europe. Europe does have it's own problems with racism, but I don't know if this particular event is anything more than a clumsy and ill-conceived attempt at racial profiling to eliminate a known problem.

We had an apartment manager who had residents complaining about an Indian guy who would stink up the exercise room with the spices he would sweat out. The manager put up a sign on the door as a thinly-veiled passive-aggressive message to this anonymous person to somehow stop stinking up the place. The boss had to explain to this manager why this was a bad approach. Managers aren't thinking about stuff like racial discrimination. They are trying to maximize profit and sometimes they do stupid stuff.
