I've seen Frank Black Francis play probably 15 times give or take, in one form or another, and I've never seen him whine or walk off stage. From what I heard, they just walked off because some people were fighting instead of having a good time. Everyone got mad at the fighters, and when things calmed down, they returned. I'm not sure why this seems lame to some, but... I wasn't there myself so I don't know for sure. I'm sure they're thinking that they want to make some money this time around and don't want to take a chance on messing up a good thing too soon. I agree that some new material would be nice, but they fill a set quite nicely with the material they have. Saw the show last night and it was awesome. Strictly business, but they sounded great. Bass and drums were a little too thick, but otherwise just a really great show. They are obviously better than last I saw them and the time spent touring has them in great form. Will be going tonight as well. *****buttons, on the other hand, had a good sound (if a bit on the noisy loud side) and a killer light show, were on the boring side though, imo. Yeah, well, Kim wrote BamThwok so... I don't know what her record deal was like, but if it's any where near standard, I'm guessing she's making more money touring Pixies songs. Most bands make their money live for the most part. At $50 a head give or take, AMH holds 4400 GA, so the door should have brought in $220K. I'm guessing they get a pretty good paycheck doing three of these shows a week or so. That said, I'm not sure what your point is. Writing new music for a band like that won't sell the venues out any faster at this point. I'm sure the record companies would like it, and if it were both good and what all the fans expect (impossible) then great for longevity, but for now I bet they are doing what they oughtta.... whether I'd like them to put out a new album or not.
I'd love to see them. They were one of the top bands of the 90's that I missed before they broke up. Would have loved to see them in their heyday. Glad they came back out and finished up the set after the disturbance. I remember Smashing Pumpkins once walking off the set after 2 songs because some jackass threw a bottle at them. They didn't come back out, and I wrote them off immediately afterwards.
Funny. Smashing Pumpkins either played recently or will play soon in Houston. From what I understand, Pixies tickets soldout quick, everyone was excited about the show. The Smashing Pumpkins... not so much. At least from what I gather, I could be wrong. If true its funny. Tables have turned.
Wasn't that at UH? They don't record new material because they don't get along in real life. They made no money in the 80's and then they got a lot bigger in the "indie scene" after Kurt Cobain talked about them and when Where is my Mind? was featured on the Fight Club soundtrack. So they got back together to tour to make some real money off of the great music that wasn't appreciated enough when it originally was released. I see no problem with that
I think so. I want to say it was a Lollapalooza event. Walked off after two songs. Corgan left with a departing FU, Houston. I had mainly went to see them too so I was pretty pissed. The Beastie Boys were okay as the final night's act, although they got a rousing boo when they mentioned that they were bummed the Rockets just beat the Knicks in the Finals.
It wasn't even a sold out show. I bought my tix around two weeks before the show. I bought grand tier right next to the stage and they still had GA available.
yeah, i notice on dark shots my camera puts a spot in the same place on every one. oh well, enjoy? I have many more.
Right around that same time period, at a Counting Crows concert some bozos walked on stage during "Mr Jones" (whats with Houston and disruptive fans?) The last closing lines to the song is "I want to be, a big star...", while that was going on Adam Duritz instead sang: "" Mr Jones and me.... *lights go off * ... Get the F**K off the stage "" to raucous applause. He improvised different lyrics into songs routinely, but that was by far the best one even though it really wasnt meant to be an improvisation. Days later the Rockets won their first title. Good times.
Just left the second Austin show. Freaking kicked ass as always. Got a black Francis guitar pick.
i dont know - that cannonball song was all over the place - she could probably have retired just off the $$$ from that one tune. again, i would bet that that one song made more money for her than the pixies made over their entire career (85-92). i dont know if i want them to make new music - their catalog is untouchable right now. but i do find it funny that they have now been in 'reunion' mode for about as long as they were a band the first time around. generally bands get back together, do a reunion tour and leave it at that or they start making new music again. pixies are riding it out, but i dont blame them at all. they definitely deserve the $$$. i read interviews where the drummer said he was broke and in and out of jail before getting back together, so im happy for him. the show last night was great though! i felt like i was 15 years old again! and the video stuff was cool - especially the crazy hooded guy during mr. grieves and the desert stuff during silver. some of it looked like it might have been done by the same guy who did all their album covers. musically, my favorite moment was when they 'jammed' out the ending of #13 baby - pure bliss! i forget how great santiago is and what a big influence he has been on my own guitar playing over the years.
In a Pixies documentary I saw, they were saying they were all kind of willing, but it's hard because they wouldn't want to do a new album unless it was going to be as good as their past albums, and with so much pressure on it, that might be kind of hard.
Yeah, again, most artists make money on touring, not albums... so we'll just have to disagree on that, and avoid altogether discussing how much better the Pixies are than the Breeders, regardless of any commercial success of last splash or cannonball. The show definitely was great last night too. They mixed it up just a bit in the encores, so it wasn't a carbon copy of the night before, though they tried otherwise. Joey's parents being there was kinda cool for whatever reason (incidentally, I think his father plays that keyboard intermission on Bamthwok). Got myself a pick as well.
