    Depp's 'Pirates' plunders record $132M

    LOS ANGELES -
Johnny Depp's boozy, woozy buccaneer Jack Sparrow has plundered the box office, with "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" taking in a record $132 million in its first three days, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Disney's swashbuckling sequel sailed past the previous all-time best debut, 2002's "Spider-Man," which took in $114.8 million in its first weekend.

"Dead Man's Chest" also did nearly three times the business of its predecessor, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," which took in $46.6 million over opening weekend in 2003.

The sequel surpassed that total in its first day alone, taking in $55.5 million Friday to beat the previous single-day record of $50 million, set last year by "Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith." With $44.7 million on Saturday, "Dead Man's Chest" also became the first movie to top $100 million in just two days.

Despite sky-high projections for the "Pirates" sequel from industry analysts, producer Jerry Bruckheimer said he had expected "Dead Man's Chest" to open closer to the $77 million debut weekend of last spring's "The Da Vinci Code."

"When people in the industry predicted these high numbers, I thought they were just trying to be mean. So no matter how good we did, if we did $100 million, we'd be failures," Bruckheimer told The Associated Press on Sunday. "I didn't think we'd get near these numbers."

The movie sent Hollywood's overall business soaring. The top 12 films grossed $206.5 million, up 48 percent from the same weekend last year, when "Fantastic Four" opened with $56.1 million.

"Dead Man's Chest" raked in nearly double the total of the rest of the top 12 combined. The previous weekend's top film, "Superman Returns," fell to No. 2 with $21.85 million, down 58 percent from opening weekend.

"Superman Returns" has grossed $141.7 million in 12 days and should fly past the $200 million mark, said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., which released the film.

The sci-fi tale of drug addiction "A Scanner Darkly" debuted strongly in limited release with $406,000 in 17 theaters. Shot in live action then painted over with digital animation, the movie stars
    Keanu Reeves,
    Winona Ryder and
Robert Downey Jr. in a hallucinatory tale adapted from Philip K. Dick's novel.

In a single weekend, "Dead Man's Chest" reeled in 43 percent of the $305 million total domestic gross the original "Pirates" rang up in its entire six-month theatrical run.

The movie's audience was equally divided between males and females, and it drew strongly from all age groups, according to Disney.

"It is straight across the board," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney, which based the movies on its "Pirates of the Caribbean" theme park ride. "Everybody's coming. Whoever it is, they're there."

Even factoring in higher admission prices since 2002, "Dead Man's Chest" still set a record of just under 20 million tickets sold, about 200,000 more than "Spider-Man."

"Maybe the only movie that has a chance to beat this record might be the next `Pirates' movie," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

Audiences won't have to wait long. Disney shot much of the third installment at the same time as "Dead Man's Chest," which ends in a cliffhanger leading into part three, due in theaters over Memorial Day weekend next year.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. Final figures will be released Monday.

    1. "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," $132 million.

    2. "Superman Returns," $21.85 million.

    3. "The Devil Wears Prada," $15.6 million.

    4. "Click," $12 million.

    5. "Cars," $10.3 million.

    6. "Nacho Libre," $3.3 million.

    7. "The Lake House," $2.8 million.

    8. "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," $2.5 million.

    9. "Waist Deep," $1.9 million.

    10. "The Break-Up," $1.6 million.

It was ok. Like some others, the accents made it hard to follow.

The best part of Pirates was the trailers. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby is going to be huge. I almost fell out of my seat I was laughing so hard.

I was slightly disapointed. It fell into that Blockbuster sequel=more action, more CGI, less story trap.

It just wasn't as clever as the first and i felt it tried too hard too duplicate the great and original dialogue from the first as well. The interaction between characters in the original is what i thought really set it apart from other action/adventures but this one just lacked in that department.

Do people really find the accents in this movie hard to follow?

I've always been around people with accents so I rarely have trouble understanding what someone has to say regardless of accent. This movie wasn't any different.

My biggest complaint was that I had difficulty understanding what some of the characters were saying. As someone else mentioned, the Jamaican lady was the biggest culprit, and she did say some important stuff (was able to figure most of it out between my wife and I after the fact). I don't know if it was really all the accents, though. I think some of it was just bad sound editing. Just tough to make out what characters are saying when there is too much background noise.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. Who does the score for these movies? They did a fantastic job. I kind of had a double edged sword (pun intended) reaction to the fight scenes. While in the first movie, it seemed most of the sword fighting was spectacular, creative with some occasional humor thrown in (usually during some short stoppage in the fight), this movie seemed to inject a LOT more humor during the fighting itself. It made it more fun in some ways, but cheapened it in others. Still, some very cool stunt and choreography work.

I can't say I liked the CGI Davey Jones as much as I did Geoffrey Rush in the first one. They are obviously trying to get a little bit of the human side into the Jones character and maybe give him a little bit of dimension to his character. But I didn't feel it really worked much...too hard to muster any kind of sympathy for a computer generated guy.

    SPOILER WARNING ***************

How the hell is it that the monkey is still cursed?

I was wondering the same thing as soon as it popped on screen.

Overall I really enjoyed this film but I had the same complaint I had with the first one, it was uncessarily long, esp the fight sequences near the end but I still really enjoyed the movie, that being said, I was shocked to see how much it brought in over the weekend!

Fine Entertainment. Good action with a bit humor thrown in.

Disjounted, unfinished, and pretty empty story line. It's quite bad as a stand-alone film. Maybe it can becomes richer and making more sense with the Pirates 3.

    *Minor Spoiler*

The monkey was still cursed because after the credits in the first movie there was an additional scene where the monkey went back to the chest and grabbed a coin and then jumped toward the camera. So the monkey is cursed again, but is the only one cursed since its the only one that took a coin.

And Hans Zimmer did the score; which if you listen closely you'll notice similarities to some of his past movies; most notably the The Rock.

Okay, that was my best explanation for it. I never saw that scene after the first one but I suspected something like it happened.

Do you guys remember that "I got gypped feeling" after watching Matrix 2? I had the same feeling after watching Dead Man's Chest. IMO, the acting seemed off, the story line sucked, and the accents were hard to understand.

I guess I just expected too much for this movie :(

Well I didn't feel gypped by Reloaded; I guess I was one of the few.

Actually though I did find it hard to understand the dialogue at times...couldn't have all been due to the accents. I think Kiera and Orlando were given a lot more to do this time around, and their characters definitely expanded. Capt. Jack though might have had too much of a cowardly vibe in this one, but that's obivously setting up for a heroic conclusion to his story arc. Everything about this one I liked better than the original, which actually bored me somewhat. Even the ending despite the cliffhanger, I felt was more likened to the open-ended nature of the Two Towers (was more of a complete movie essentially) than Matrix Reloaded (literally just cut off and was obviously split in two)

So my question is how does Barbosa come back to life when he was left for dead in the first Pirates?

Wondering that myself but I assume that he's not as dead as he appears at the end of the first one

If anyone saw and enjoyed the first one, I don't see how they can have any complaints about this.

It had the exact same feel, with a nice twist on the story line, and cool new CGI/special effects to look at.

I liked it a lot and am excited to see how the story raps up.

    SPOILERS

Well, since the Jamaican woman seems to indicate that there is a way one can come back from the dead if one is willing to sail through the darkest depths of hell or whatever speech it was that she gave to them at the end, I'm sure Barbosa utilized the same method to come back. I think his appearance at the end is as much a confirmation that Jack WILL be back as it was introducing a character for the 3rd movie.
