Zen Buddhism and the Triangle Offense. The fast-paced nature of basketball required Jackson to anticipate his opponents’ actions, which he learned to do using Zen practice and continuing meditation with visualization. He even treated every game as “a chance for communion – with my teammates and opponents, with myself,” which celebrated “the dribbling, leaping, dancing rites of salvation.”
Phil Jackson actually hated Rudy's coaching. He complained vocally about how forcing the ball to a star player especially in the post is not real basketball.
I swear this dude was born before his time, he is the ultimate victim and Gen Z is claiming his soft ass.
Was it an Anth class? And did you title it Big Chief Triangle? edit: saw your explanation. Theology class?
There were never people calling him the 2nd best player after Jordan, what are you talking about? That was never a consensus thought or something that was widely written. Where are you getting this from?
How do you judge defensive advanced number? He also did not shoot the 3 which affects his advanced numbers and defense was a lot more physical and scoring was down. All of that would affect "advanced numbers"
His business partners and friends are not a posse. Why is a posse only assigned to black friends? Why do you consider them a posse?
Phil is a Racist. He's made quite a few comments over the years singling out black players and overall negativity towards black players. **** Phil.
has had deep teams and benefitted greatly from injury. Not knocking his accomplishments but Pippen could have done the same with those teams IMO. You have to look at the entire picture when judging Pippens teams, you can't just judge it by results. Kawhi also lost a 3-1 lead when he actually had his own team, so how do you factor that in? Yikes, he certainly sounds racist.
Legit question, are you old enough to where you could really consume sports media in the early 90's? It wasn't anything close to the prevailing opinion but "I tell you what, Scottie Pippen is the second best player in the NBA" was a reasonably out there minority take back then in some sports media and just in general barbershop-type banter during the first threepeat. After Jordan retired and Scottie led the Bulls to a really good season but also no longer being the same championship caliber team that take largely died but another reasonably out there minority take of "Scottie is solely riding Jordan's coattails and couldn't lead his own team" take kind of died as well to where there was less variance in how people thought of Pippen.
Dude I 1st started watching the NBA playoffs on tape delay. I watched Jordan's 63 point game live on TV. I watched all of the Bulls championships and rooted against them every time. I never heard anybody say Pippen was the 2nd best player in the NBA and if somebody did they would have been laughed at from my basketball watching friends. The Sports media was not saying that at all and I know because I consumed a lot of sports media then. Nobody said that on the Sports Reporters or in print.
You are probably older than me then, so that's fair. I'll see if I can dig anything up when I have time to look. I agree it's a horrible take, but horrible takes could exist and last a little longer in those days. That's kind of why I remember it. Because it pissed me off that there were people who legitimately had Pippen ahead of Dream and others. If you are saying nobody you would consider legitimate had that take you might be right.
I am not sure why people are getting so twisted about this. In my experience, and I work with many white males who are Phil Jackson's age, the opinions expressed in the excerpt from "Maverick" are very prominent. Some of it is just unfamiliarity, some bigotry (which is different from racism), and some is envy. Clearly Phil Jackson has some inherent negative attitudes toward the playing styles of AA players. Its like the older white guys who claim they love college basketball more than NBA ball because NBA players are "show boaters" and "ball hogs". On the surface, that appears to be a fairly innocuous and racially neutral statement. When you dig deeper, however, you see that it is actually a passively aggressive, racist statement. Why? Simple, white players who play in the NBA today play the same way AA players do, because they have no choice. Otherwise, they would not make it. So honestly, most of Phil Jackson's complaints and most of the others of his ilk is based on bigotry and envy. Ultimately Scottie Pippen's opinion is his opinion; there is no objectively racist standard or threshold that one must satisfy before you can call someone a bigot. It is not a court of law; ultimately, its all subjective. If Scottie Pippen, who played for and has known Phil Jackson for 20 plus years, says he is a racist, then who are we to argue. I don't know either of these individuals and neither do any of the participants on this board. I am sure others will say Scottie is wrong, and Phil isn't racist. They also have a right to feel that way, but so does Scottie Pippen. That said, Phil has been awfully quiet on this. If someone called me a bigot on a nationally syndicated radio show, I would immediately defend myself. I would not want that to tarnish my legacy. No one wants to end up like Bob Cousy or Lou Holtz. By the way, this is why I always loved Larry Bird. Larry Bird is the non-Phil Jackson. Larry Bird played ball the way AA players did. He even said that he learned to play basketball by playing against the AA hotel workers during their lunch break when he was growing up in French Lick. In fact, they were the only people who actually let him play with them. I think this one of the reasons AA's always liked and respected Larry Bird.
I think hypothetically if a person always rolls 5-10 deep they can be referred to as having a "posse"
