Read my post above about zones. It hasnt really effected Duncan or Shaq, as they have won championships regardless. Hakeem was arguably better in his prime than both.

Also, remember this. Imagine how good Garnett and Ben Wallace do with zone defense. Now imagine Olajuwon guarding the paint....

Hakeem was a monster. I don't think anyone is saying that Yao is Hakeem, but the model of winning basketball with the Rockets, Spurs, and Lakers has been an effective inside-out offense with tough defense played on the other end. From what I've seen, Yao is capable of being a pretty good passer out of the post when the double teams arrive. He's not a finisher like Hakeem or Shaq, but he makes enough of his shots to draw the double team. This puts the onus on the outside shooters to shoot the 3. Look at the Spurs of last year. There was Stephen Jackson, Steve Kerr, and a good 3 point shooting Bowen (he's tailed off bigtime this year). I saw the Spurs in the playoffs utilize Kerr quite often to can that 3 from outside when Duncan got doubled or triple-teamed. Yao is more likely than Hakeem or Shaq to pass out of the double team, so this means more of the shots will be taken by the perimeter guys.

It is not about YAO or HAKEEM's game itself
but about passing to the open man

The inside out game is about having Shooters on the perimeter
and getting the ball to them.

Look at the old Rocket sonics games
They played the passing lanes and not the players
    effectively killing the Rockets

    Neither DUNCAN nor SHAQ
play the inside outside game . .esp not like the Rockets did

    Duncan has more Cutters
    and Shaq has a triangle
