It depended on where we were but it was surprisingly pleasant. Costa Rica, being very near the Equator, doesn't really have seasons as we think of them. One of our guides said there were only two seasons: rainy and rainier. We were there in the rainier season (late July).

In Tortuguero, which is on the Caribbean coast, it could get hot and muggy like Houston but generally, if it was overcast or there was a breeze, it was very comfortable. The lodge we stayed at (Mawamba) did not have AC in the rooms but we didn't miss it. Having said that, on a few occasions it did get warm. The first night, with the fan on in our room, was downright cool.

Arenal was a little better but it was either overcast or raining the whole time we were there so that naturally cooled it down. Unfortunately we couldn't see the volcano because the cloud ceiling was so low. One guide did take us to "see" the volcano at night. You couldn't actually see anything but occasionally red sparks would appear tumbling down the side of the mountain. Supposedly they were boulders and other matter ejected from the top that rolled down the side below the clouds. It was cool to see even if you were just staring out into the inky black to see random sparks of red.

Monteverde was terrific. It is a cloud forest and sits at about 5000 ft. of elevation. The days were in the upper 70's and at night it got into the 50's. We did a Zip line "tour" and that was fantastic. Just a lot of fun.

While we got a LOT of rain and made several rain forest treks in torrential downpours (that would clear up for a few minutes then start again) we did get lucky in that our time cruising the canals of Tortuguero or in Monteverde were relatively rain free - even sunny and pleasant.

So, to sum up the answer to your question the weather, except for the rain, was nice and pleasant. It's kind of sad when you are in the middle of the Central American jungle and it's more comfortable then back home in Houston.

The pictures look great, especially the one of the spider monkey. My girl and I always try to take pictures of the wild life when we go on a holliday. (usually we go to places with great wildlife:D).

Also, I would love to have seen a Sloth.

When i see these pictures i would have to include Costa Rica on the list of countries I want to visit.

Actually we were only near a beach four 1.5 days and there were no surfers... :( The beach we were near had black sand (which was cool) but was supposedly way too dangerous a place to swim.

WOW impressive photos! Thanks for sharing them.

Can I ask how long were you down there? I have always wanted to travel to that part of Central America. Belize, Costa Rica and Panama are all intriguing areas to me.

I'd love to take an extended trip down there maybe a few weeks if I could afford it.

The character you see in the photo is Toby from The Office. He has mentioned in the past seasons and in the second-to-last episode of last season that he is going to Costa Rica.

We were there for 8 days/7 nights on a pre-packaged tour from Costa Rica Sun Tours (who we had a great experience with). It was expensive but we got a private guide/driver for most of the trip. If I had to do it again I would fly into San Jose or Liberia and then just rent a car and book hotels via the web or by phone. Then let the hotel help in booking excursions. You could go to the Arenal area, stay for 4 or 5 days and have a blast. I belive that you can even hire shuttles to take you from either airport to wherever you want to go in the country.
