He actually grew up pretty poor. Check out some of the Yao bios, they're actually pretty fascinating. Long story short, Yao's mom made some enemies in the Chinese government and it was hard for his family to do things like get enough food rations to feed themselves and their quickly growing son.

Those photos look like they're from the 1940s or 50s. China is kinda in a time warp, ain't they? I guess that makes this their 1960s or 70s right now.
this girl is a famous actress in china now,she is not yao's girl friend. they just in the same primary school,at that time ,both they are the famous students in that school.
