I'm so indecisive...I've been debating this for a while was looking into the 8900 Curve, but you're right, it doesn't support 3G...Anywho, I thought about waiting for the Samsung memoir, but not sure it supports 3G either and haven't heard much about it other than the 8 megapixel camera...
Broadband speeds vs dialup speeds. Well, it's not THAT big of a difference, but in essence it's night and day.
C-C-C-Combo Breaker Sorry to hear that G2 is now in the works, and its 'close to perfection' don't let this deter you from purchasing the G1 though, i reckon this baby won't hit the shelves for another 8 months source <--- hands on video inside Android G2 Hands On: Close to Perfection HTC and Google are getting closer to perfection with the new Android G2, the HTC Magic. Nice finish, great form factor. Check out our video, including the obligatory comparison with Apple's iPhone, and hands-on impressions: The bad news first: Apart from my gripes about the user interface—which are still there—there is one but. A big BUT, bigger than Ramona's, the planetary lady with accidental moustache who serves the bocadillos down at one of the fair's restaurants: The software keyboard. On this first touch, the keyboard felt cramped, probably a result of the screen size, which is smaller than the iPhone's—which is the obvious soft keyboard reference, since it was the first one to implement a finger-touch software keyboard. In addition to that, there's an additional user interface problem, this time having to do with perception: Instead of popping up above your finger—like in the iPhone so you can clearly see what you pressed—the keys appear on the sides. They flash quickly as you press them, and I found it extremely distracting. They said that they put them on the sides not to obstruct the view, but knowing the over-the-key implementation in the iPhone's software keyboard, it doesn't make much sense. Furthermore, when you are typing with one finger only—like I often do—you will be obstructing the view of the flashing key with your finger. The reason: When you type on the right side of the keyboard, the flashing keys appear on the left. When you click on the right, they pop out on the left. Other than this, the rest is great. There's a new Google Mail feature to delete or classify mail in bulk, as well as a faster camera, which now can take video—which obviously means you can play back video as well. The rest of the interface and features is what you already have in the Android G1. However, what really steals the show here is the hardware itself. HTC has got a very smooth phone, which feels great on your hands and in your pants' pockets. While it's sightly thicker than the iPhone, the narrower, rounded body, and weight makes it feel the same size. For sure, a lot less bulky than the G1, which looks like a brick next to this. And as you have seen in the shots, the final HTC Magic is quite pretty. Have no doubt: This thing alone will make many consumers put up with the less-than-ideal software keyboard. Overall, the first feeling is that we got a potential winner here. If they can manage to make the software keyboard better, Apple will definitely have a formidable enemy in the Android G2.
my decision to go with the 8900 curve instead of the google g1 is purely based on my dislike to 'touch screen' the only way i would purchase a touch screen right now, is if there is a phone that has the behold's 'pressure touch' with the size and design of the htc cruise.... until then..... i can only dream i really like the trackball included in the blackberry series, its literally like having a mouse
For some reason, that article is blocked here at work. Can you post the video or pics? I want that phone already. I'm still not crazy about touch keyboard. My sidekick isn't 2 years old yet...hmmm maybe I should wait. This piece of **** was expensive so I might use it to death to make my money worth it.
roflmao, i would go crazy if i couldn't get through to gawker media at work <object width="400" height="302"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="movie" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=3253877&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=1&show_portrait=0&color=&fullscreen=1" /><embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=3253877&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=1&show_portrait=0&color=&fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="400" height="302"></embed></object><br /><a href="http://vimeo.com/3253877">Android G2: HTC Magic Hands ON</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user562128">Gizmodo</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>. hope that helps with 2 year contracts w/ t-mobile, iirc, you're eligible for upgrade after just 1 year
i think they're blocking it because the link has "hands-on" and websense thinks it's sex content. oh, i don't want the touch keyboard. i really dislike it. that's why i don't want to go for iPhone. the reason why i like sidekick is because of their keyboard. overall, that G2 looks cool. like with any phone, it's bound to have problems eventually.
Lady Di, I picked up a G1 after having my sidekick 08 for about 4-6 months. The G-1 is everything the sk is and more. The touch screen is very clear, and the ability to assign custom ringtones is a huge plus as opposed to buying what the sk market thinks you should have. Upgrades to be coming are video and possible flash player. You can also set certain phone numbers to go straight to voice mail. Email access and messaging is a breeze. Free apps are good and getting better. I recently installed the multitouch option and auto rotate for the browser, and it plays youtube video. The G1 can handle up the 16 gb on a microsd card. The only thing I miss from the sk is the domed keys of the keyboard. The G1 has domed keys, but they are not as pronounced.
No slide out keyboard? I'd pass. Not really a fan of on screen keyboards. If the G1 didn't have a slide out, I'm not sure I would have got it. Why so soon though? They should at least wait a year so the AndroidOS itself can grow some legs before it goes onto more advanced hardware.
Perhaps they are trying to capitalize on those that like the Iphone, but not the closed app market. Personally, the keypad was what sold me on the G1.
That's great to hear. I'm definitely getting it. How much did you pay for it? I just called T-Mobile. They told me I would have to pay for a minutes plan since they don't have a data only plan so it would be like $65 bucks for me monthly with minutes and unlimited data plan. That is okay with me, I guess. I'll much rather to pay $35 bucks only for data but oh well. They told me I'm only eligible for $50 bucks discount and I still had 6 months left for a full discount. It would be $349 for me. Uhm, I think I'll just wait until this summer. Eliminating my bad debt (minus car ) is more important!
I got mine on the full upgrade discount, about $200 including tax. Since I picked up the SK 08 recently, I did not qualify for any upgrade discount, but my wife did, so I used her upgrade and gave her my SK. We're on a $99 family plan, and I got the $35 data package. I might downgrade to the $24.00 data package because I'm not too sure that I send and receive over 400 texts per month. Like you, I was hesitant to buy it. I finally got it and now wish I had bought it a lot sooner!
There are multiple IM clients available as apps on the G1. This phone just keeps getting better and better.
Well... I can tell you right now.. The new iPhone from all the rumors and news will be better than the G2.
100 Percent Obvious: Next-Gen iPhone Due This Summer T-Mobile G2 / Magic to Get 5 Megapixel Camera? rumor: July release, $179 price tag, white color. Might be good to wait a bit before getting a new phone.
