One of my 2 or 3 favorites, and this is soup weather. I know some of you guys have your grandma's old family recipe for making the broth...please help a whiteboy out. The veggies and meat I can handle (except for yall's meatballs) but I definitely don't want the google Martha Stewart version.

No self respecting Houstonian should be attempting to make their own pho. The city is blessed with cheap options.

That's like saying a Texan should never cook his own BBQ. I call BS on that.

Plus, I left Houston a decade ago.

i do miss houston's cheap pho's with large servings.

it's difficult enough to find pho's where i am now and when i do find some, they're very pricey with like a quarter of the serving.

Exactly. This place just opened up a location in Marble Falls (I just ate there, hence the thread) and it is decidedly mediocre, I miss the real stuff. It's one of those things that I love but have never cooked for myself.

If this doesn't work out, just go to Youtube and find some Vietnamese lady showing you how to cook it. :D

you definitely need star anise, charred onion and ginger to get the broth right. without those ingredients you got nothing.

"Just go to youtube and..." could be the first and only response to 99% of the threads in the hangout, but that defeats the purpose.

Things I don't like cooking and would rather go to a restaurant for.

    1) stuff restaurants do better than me
    2) very time consuming to make
    3) requires lots of ingredients

If I had 2 and 3 then 1 might be debatable but still. Plus it's not like like buying a bowl of pho is expensive. It will cost more to buy your own ingredients and make it unless your making a giant pot for family and planning on having leftovers in which case you gotta buy fresh veggies and herbs after couple days. Pain in the ass. Oh and I order salad rolls too and that **** takes time and ingredients as well.

OP you'll probably make it once and never again.

If you've ever eaten at Pho Binh trailer, I don't think homemade pho will ever suffice

The best vegetarian Pho is at Loving Hut. I'm not really sure, because I don't really like Pho. But anyways, it's pretty good.

Time and money are irrelevant. Lots of things that are worthwhile to me take effort: butchering an animal, growing a garden, making sausage (HEB does all that!), fixing things, building things (just hire somebody!), etc.... Gumbo's a pain in the ass to do right, but I do make some kickass gumbo anyway.

Plus, cooking is a hobby of mine that I enjoy.

Thank you for your concern, though.
