The Rockets have Bird rights on both Scola and Lowry. If Jamison's $13M+ salary is added for 2010-11, then the Rockets could probably bring back Scola and Lowry and try to straddle the luxury tax line. Still, I don't think I'd be interested in Jamison's contract.

Every team gets the MLE every year and the Bi-Annual Exception (commonly known as the LLE) once every two years (depending on whether the team used it the prior year). However, if a team wants to use its cap space, it has to renounce its rights to these salary cap exceptions.

If the Rockets add Iguodala or Jamison via trade this week, they probably can't afford to use their MLE, since that would put them over the luxury tax, assuming that Scola and Lowry are re-signed.

However, if the Rockets make the Knicks trade, Jared Jeffries's bad contract is still small enough to allow the Rockets to re-sign Scola and Lowry AND use the full MLE (starting salary of about $5.6M) this summer.

I'm holding out hope that the Knicks trade will be made as originally reported.

(Although, someone mentioned the idea of involving Philly as a third team, hoping to entice them with Jordan Hill and extra picks. While Iggy has a bloated contract, I wouldn't have a problem adding a talent of his caliber.)

If the Knicks deal happens, do the Rockets have enough to make a contending offer to one of the top tier free agents of 2010?

What are you saying hell no for? Didn't I propose this:

Wouldn't that mean we keep Hill.

A resounding yes. It would be a MAJOR dick move to use NY's incoming asstes in a SNT for a max level player. If we used Harrington to plunder some more assets from Chicago, it would be a masterful strategy by Morey. Getting Chicago and NY to gut thier teams assets for cap space, then use those assets to get what they covet.

Rocket Assets other teams could want:
    Brooks
    Lowry
    Budinger
    Landry
    Scola
    Hayes
    Battier
    Ariza
    Hill
    Rockets 2010 #1
    Knicks 2011 #1
    Knicks 2012 #1

Shoot, thats probably enough to land 2 max level talents in a sign and trade while still having quality pieces left over.

I'm really sad that this deal has apparently lost legs. Too bad we can't do a 3-way deal with NY and Philly.

Houston trades Chase Budinger and Tracy McGrady
Houston receives Andre Iguodala, Jared Jefferies, and the Knicks 2011 1st round pick

We get a star player without having to take back the Dally pill/trade kicker, and we get what could be a high first rounder in the future, and only lose dead weight and one real asset in Budinger

NY trades Al Harrington, Jared Jeffries, Jordan Hill, and 2011 1st round pick
NY receives Tracy McGrady and the 76ers 2010 2nd round pick

NY does this to get the cap room to sign Lee and take a shot at LeBron while picking up a high second rounder in 2010. They shed the contracts of Jeffries and Hill while only really giving up a future pick that they assume will be low anyway.

Philadelphia trades Andre Iguodala and a 2010 2nd round pick
Philadelphia receives Chase Budinger, Jordan Hill, and Al Harrington

Philadelphia rids themselves of Iguodala's long contract and gets back a nice expiring (Harrington) that can contribute and other teams covet (meaning he can be flipped), as well as two young rookie prospects to help with the rebuilding process in Budinger and Hill.

I don't know about the picks, that can be changed to make it fair, but the players work, and seemingly, everyone gets what they want.

Just listening to 610 and they said the Rockets and Sixers are working on a secondary trade not involving McGrady. They gave no specifics.

Interesting. A rotational player on the way out? Who is on Philly that we want, that they'd actually give up?

Who else on the Sixers should we be interested in besides Iggy? Its Iguodala or no deal at all, especially since we are supposedl giving up a rotational player for him.

Don't the Sixers value Young more than they do Iggy? I thought the supposed deal breaker between the philly-houston trade was Morey wanted Young or Speights included in an Iggy deal?

I'm thinking it was Philly that wanted our talent back as well (Landry, Scola, Brooks).
