Well, I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure that this is not possible. If you resign Lowry for, let's say $4M per year and then trade him away you will have to take back equal salaries (if you are over the cap). It's the same reason why you can't trade McGrady ($23M) for Iguodala ($12M) straight up.
Again, I'm no expert. I'm sure someone else could it rxplain to you more eloquently.

If the team has cap space I believe it can absorb a contract without having to give one back. Thats why you can trade players for picks straight up I think.

If a team has cap space that team could just sign them

You're right, if they are below the cap they can absorb it. But I always thought that a sign-and-trade only is a useful tool for teams that are capped out and otherwise wouldn't be able to sign the player. If the the other team has cap space, why should they agree to do a sign-and-trade deal, when they could just sign without giving up anything.

1.) Teams signing a player outright are limited in the terms of the contract. The original team can give an extra year and slightly higher raises, which they can also transfer over in a sign and trade. We did this with Pippen back in the day ( )

2.) The team with cap room may want to retain some of that cap space. For example, you have $9 m in cap space, and want to sign a $9 m player. If you can purge a $4-5m player, that's one more free agent you can sign.

LOL. What kind of three team trades are these? Dalembert's contract is so bad the "sweetener" needed to get him out is AI. Yet you're saying a mysterious third team would somehow be ok with getting Dalembert yet not receiving AI?

in the first scenario, why Sacramento take Dalembert's humongous contract AND part with Hawes just for JT, Tmac and a protected 1st round pick? Hawes alone is worth those three things, not counting Dalembert's contract.

in the second scenario, Portland downgrades from Przy and blake to just Dalembert, and loses Outlaw as well for..Jermaine Taylor? Outlaw by himself is better than Jermaine Taylor.

No way those guys would accept such lopsided terms, which is why Bima and Carl are correct. The only way to get AI is to accept Dalembert's contract and part with some of our core players. At best it would seem like a lateral move from the roster we have now, and there's the risk that it would disrupt the team chemistry by exchanging players. If that's the case, its better to let Tmac expire and sign someone for 7-9 mill, at least that way the net result is an upgrade from what we have this year.

I watched the game and was impressed with both of them tbh. They had a huge lead, but Wash. made a comeback in the third. Arenas looked pretty good, as did Jamison...Butler, Blatche looked flat out terrible.

Crowd was booing the Sixers during the final two minutes. Cant imagine management will be pleased at all.

This crap has been taking too long. Can't wait anymore, dropped T-Mac from my league, picked up Luther Head. I would have never thought this in a million years, but it happened.

Blake can be bought out by Philly. And Pryz is injured for the year and Portland needs some size, NOW.

Yeah, Dalembert doesn't seem so bad right now.
