You know what? I'd rather ONLY give up tmac and not get much back in return than give up tmac AND young talent for a possible impact player.

When Yao returns, we're going to struggle getting our guys minutes as it is. People talk about someone starting over Hayes, but man he is one tough defender. So I don't think even Hayes will go back to a small minute player.

Let's roll with close to what we've got and give ourselves some flexibility in the future.

    GET 'ER DONE!

Sure, if you could get either of those two deals (especially the first one), the Rockets would do it. I really like Iguodala as a player and, while I think he's overpaid, he's worth paying IF you don't also have to take on Dalembert's contract (or similar salary next year).

The problem is, while it would be great if Sacramento would be willing to take on Dalembert for Kenny Thomas's expiring contract, I don't see it happening. My guess is that the reason why Dalembert-to-the-Kings talks broke down earlier this year was because Sacramento was unwilling to trade expiring contracts for Dalembert. They probably offered Nocioni and Udrih (both with bad contracts) for Sam.

But again, IF (and that's a huge, gigantic, humongous IF) Sacramento was willing to trade Kenny Thomas for Samuel Dalembert, then I'd do that trade. If Philly was foolish enough to throw in Speights, I'd DEFINITELY do that trade.

Dude, if there was a logical way to move Dalembert out of Houston while retaining Iguodala, Sixers would have already moved Dalembert out of Philly while retaining Iguodala. There isn't.

Nobody wants Dalembert. Also, usually not many teams have the cap room to absorb a Dalembert contract without giving Rockets contracts back. The only real way you move Dalembert is by giving the other team significant talent.

And yes, that is still true next year, when Dalembert's contract is "expiring." Utah had to give away Maynor to move the much smaller and insured "expiring" contract of Harping in order to not take money back.

    Dude.

Well I was not questioning your list or anything.
The guy I replied about asked who Rox could sign as a 2nd-3rd tier guy with the MLE so that is why my list excluded bigger names.
I doubt you are getting Lee,Boozer,Ginobli,Ray Allen with MLE money.

I would take Dalembert in an Iggy trade, if we could move Battier and Andersen for expirings. This would allow us to retain Scola and Lowry for next year and still stay under the luxury tax line.

Dude, you really sure about that? Sometimes, three-team trades are the way to go. Maybe Philly isn't willing to take in some contracts/pieces that Houston would if we had Dalembert. You never know. I doubt it would be the first time it's happened in the NBA.

    Dude.

Basically, it comes down to this:

    1. Iguodala is owed about $56.4 mil in the upcoming 4 seasons.

    2. Dalembert is pretty worthless as a player, particularly for this team.

    3. If the Rockets get Iguodala and Dalembert (owed $12 mil next year), they are essentially spending more than $80 million on Iguodala, when you consider Dalembert's salary and luxury tax.

Is Iguodala at $80 mil for 4 years a good deal? I don't think Morey or Alexander think so.

    4. If you "trade Battier and Andersen for expirings," then yiou are paying Iguodala $56.4 mil for 4 years AND losing the service of a player that Daryl Morey deem important to this team.

I believe that Iguodala is barely worth the $56.4 mil for 4 years, and losing Battier makes the deal much less desirable for Morey. That's just how he operates.

In any case, the Rockets are not taking Dalembert to get Iguodala. If that means no deal gets done, that's just how it is.

What scenario would seem reasonable to you? Who is that "third team" that would take Dalembert's contract and what do you think they want in exchange for taking on that contract?

I've already posted two trades. Bima quoted them on this page.

Afraid not. Even without Battier and Andersen, a Rockets squad with Iguodala and Dalembert would be only about $5M or so below the tax threshold BEFORE re-signing Scola or Lowry. You might be able to keep Lowry and stay under the tax, maybe Scola instead, but not both. Also, I don't think Morey's going to dump Shane for nothing. At least not until the 2010 NBA Draft (if at all).

Just trading at all in the NBA is hard because you have to match salaries and it must appear as though each team is getting better (well, except Memphis).
Adding in another team just adds an order of magnitude to the problems. It can be done and GM's have to float some pie-in-the-shy stuff or it would never happen; but you can't really project it.

Every GM's first thought is "will this get me fired?"

I think the 3-team trade I posted on the page before this seems reasonable.

It's not losing Battier for nothing if we get Iguodala.

I highly doubt either SAC or Portland has reason to accept these trade, among other problems with the trades which Bima already pointed out.

Portland should do the deal because they want and need size. Maybe move Houston's pick from Philly down to Portland + cash. Sacramento would do the deal because it's been rumored that they have been looking at Dalembert. They get him, plus a project guard in Taylor AND Houston's 1st round pick in a deep draft this year. They lose Thomas' expiring and a young talent in Hawes, but I think the trade would help them out this year and next.

You're right. I calculate 7.4 at the current LT, but that is almost certain to drop. Maybe Les would be willing to go a little over for Scola, but probably not that much. Scola warrants a contract of around 8-9 mill per year and Lowry 4-5. Conservatively speaking, that's 12 mill for both. At the current LT, that's ~4.6 mill over, which would cost Les another 4.6 mill, thus putting him 9.2mill over budget before filling out final roster spots.

    Hou gets iggy,kapono,speights(backup center)

Phil gets taylor,dorsey,Mcgrady...nobody mentions Kapono, he is a 6 mil expiring deal, they get Mcgrady & youth, we get iggy and a good young center.

I wouldn't see it as trading Battier for nothing. Losing Battier would be to acquire Iggy. Giving up Scola would be too difficult.

Kapono has a $6.64M player option for next year that he most assuredly will pick up. Still, if Speights is included, Morey would have to think long and hard about that deal. I just don't think Philly would do that deal.

When would the Rockets trade Battier?

Before trading for Iguodala? If so, where would they trade him?

After trading for Iguodala? If so, is Morey willing to risk not being able to "dump" Battier later on or having to trade additional "assets" to get rid of Battier's salary?

I'm not saying that it's impossible. Just that it's improbable.
