We would still be over the cap until we renounced Wesley, or he signed elsewhere. In the interim, signing a MLE player would keep us over the cap, preserving the trade exceptions.

Atlanta is under cap, they can take back salary. Salary don't need to match.

GATER, the part I bolded is not the proposed trade, which I see no way in hell Atlanta making, unless they're nuts. Now what you mentioned (the bolded part) would make a lot more sense from their end. As I said, there would have to be a future pick involved, which you address, and Head is an attractive young role player, with a least a bit of potential, who has a season where he played a lot of minutes under his belt. He has value. That makes much more sense. Can we trade two players (with the protected future 1st) to them and end up with that very nice trade exception?

Inquiring minds want to know! ;)

(man, if we could snag Harrington somehow...)

    Deckard -
Like I mentioned, I didn't read every post in this thread but jumped straight to the end game which is where you caught up with me. There are IMHO realistic scenarios for a Rox-Howard-ATL-pick swaps deal. There are incentives for both sides.

The Rox would definitely get another TE of 6.4M for Howard and a TE of 7.5M if Luther Head is included. That would be huge in trying to land Mike James via SnT. Excluding James, a trade exception that large could be huge in a summer with little cap space outside of ATL, CHA, and CHI. That's an incentive to make the pot as sweet as possible to the Hawks. A Top 18 or Top 20 protected 1st wouldn't be out of the question IMO.

From the Hawks' standpoint, they are not exactly a FA hot spot these days and they have 7 roster spots to fill. Adding Howard and Luther Hayes drops that figure to 5 and allows them flexibility in how they handle their own FA's...Harrington, Lue, Salim Stoudemire, and Royal Ivey...with their 30M in cap space. Also, Williams is $600K cheaper at 8 than he is at 5.

    Glad we could "agree"! ;)

Part of me is still wondering how much smoke the Rockets are blowing when it's perhaps Shelden Williams they want (Gene Peterson seemed to think the Rockets would in no way let him go if he were available to draft).

Granted, it leaves holes in the lineup, but Atlanta with that cap space....Juwan and Luther and the #32 and whatever to get the #5; why not? The Hawks DO have cap space and no players who want anything to do with it.

WOW. JH + 8 for 5? That would cause me to laugh on the phone. Like the first time I changed jobs and I was afraid that asking for 28K would scare them off (this was quite a few years ago) so I left the word "Open" in the desired salary. When they offerred me the job they said my starting pay would be 35K. I physically laughed on the phone. I have no poker face.

I don't care who's on the board and who's not - that's a no lose deal for us.

True, but #4 = Adam Morrison or Brandon Roy and #5 = Tyrus Thomas or someone not named Roy or Morrison.

To me, that is very risky. I would much rather have Roy or Morrison than take a chance on Thomas. Its good that we get rid of Howard's contract for nothing, but our dradt picks goes from two players that can come in and help us right away to someone who has had his character questioned by many. From articles on ESPN, Portland is in love with Morrison so if he is there at the #4, they are going to pick him up no matter what and if hes at #4, then that would mean that Roy went #3 and we would be left with Thomas possibly at #5. :(

Contract flexibility is so valubale right now...being able to get rid of Juwon Howard is worth a lot. Not having to take someone with as many issues on and off the court like Miles would be a wonderful. This is getting pretty exciting...hope it all works out.

I was looking at my calendar to see if it was April when I saw this thread.

There's no way that the Hawks do this trade. Who would want Juwan Howard. The idea that they would throw in a Zaza or Josh Childress is laughable.

Figures this original rumor of us unloading Howard for the #5th pick was wayyyy too good to be true.

although im all for removing that waste of space jhoward from our roster...

why would any team want him? he's worth some herpes and a pair of sunglasses...

bloated contract, declining skills (skills which weren't good to begin with).

any trade involving juwon howard would never ever take place, because gm's like weisbroad aren't around anymore....

The only reason a team would take JH would be to give us a completely radioactive player like Darius Miles. Some people here actually want us to make that trade.

God.... I would trade Juwan Howard for the last place finisher in Special Olympics. We would instantly become more athletic.

Juwan...just go away and take your losing culture with you.
