Everyone in NYC loved the player and are hurting to see him leave, not everyone here likes pettite, or the money spent on him. And many were Billy for Life fans, but hopefully Andy can prove his worth and win our hearts

Hakeem was washed up. Pettite isn't, that's the difference.

Hakeem left for the money, Pettite didn't. That's another difference.

    What's your point,

I don't think either group of fans should complain.

Let's bring this back to a thread about Pettite and how he's a groundball pitcher, which will work nicely at MMP.

Guerrero is most likely going to sign with Baltimore or NY Yankees (according to Gammons).

Gammons just said on SportsCenter that Clemens pitching for the Astros next seaon is not out of the realm of possibility.

I really think it is going to happen...

Why did you start a new thread for this?

I caught it on ESPN also. They said we are close, that there is a possiblity that Roger Clemens may come back for next season in order to pitch along side Pettite next season as an Astro. Both Pettite and Clemons have the same agent etc. That would be so sweet. Imagine, both Clemens and Pettite. Damn....unreal. :D

Assuming Pettite signs for 3 years/$30 million, what will the rest of our team look like, not just next year, but for the duration of the deal?
Biggio, Kent, and Hidalgo are up after next year. Bidge will (hopefully) retire, Kent won't be back with Burke ready at 2nd, and Hidalgo could come back, but only if he's not traded and takes a huge pay cut.
So where does that leave us? With those three off the books, we will have about $30 in flexibility next offseason. All of that should go to locking up Wade, Roy, and Dotel longterm.
In addition, Baggy and Ausmus should be about ready for retirement the year after next giving us another $17-$18 in two offseasons. So, this is how I see our team evolving in the next 2-3 years, and I like what I see:

    2004
    Biggio CF Pettite SP
    Ensberg 3B Oswalt
    Bagwell 1B Miller
    Berkman LF Robertson
    Kent 2B Duckworth/Hernandez
    Hidalgo RF Dotel RP
    Ausmus C Lidge
    Everett SS

    2005
    Burke/Whiteman 2B Pettite SP
    Ensberg 3B Oswalt
    Bagwell 1B Miller
    Berkman LF/1B (after Bags) Robertson
    Lane RF Duckworth/Hernandez
    Rosamond/Jimerson CF Dotel RP
    Ausmus/Buck C Lidge
    Everett SS

What do you guys think? To me, it looks like Gerry has once again done an outstanding job of staying competitive in a tight budget while always planning for the future. As staples like Bagwell, Biggio, Kent, and Wagner leave or retire, we have young guys like Berkman, Burke, Whiteman, and Lidge ready to replace them, while still holding on to our nucleus of pitching in Roy, Wade, and Andy.

Do you agree? Am I missing something very important, or does this projection actually show an accurate picture of where our team will be in 2-3 years, both talent and budget-wise?

Sorry, the spacing on those lineups were terrible. This is what they were supposed to look like:

    2004
    Biggio CF
    Ensberg 3B
    Bagwell 1B
    Berkman LF
    Kent 2B
    Hidalgo RF
    Ausmus C
    Everett SS

    Pettite SP
    Oswalt
    Miller
    Robertson
    Duckworth/Hernandez

    Dotel/Lidge CP

    2005-2006
    Burke/Whiteman 2B
    Jimerson/Rosamond CF
    Bagwell/Berkman 1B (after Bags leaves)
    Berkman/Lane LF
    Hidalgo/Lane RF
    Ensberg 3B
    Buck C
    Everett SS

    Pettite SP
    Oswalt
    Miller
    Robertson/Hernandez/Duckworth/Pluta/Redding

    Dotel/Lidge CP

thanks for the link. This is great, I hope the deal works through. It's going to be so sweet to have Pettite. And what if Clemens came too?

I know we aren't discussing this, but Oswalt is a better pitcher than Pettite. Oswalt is the ace. Pettite is a #2 who is a great playoff pitcher.

    Oswalt
    Pettite
    Miller

These guys are top 3 obviously.

I would bet that the 4/5 spots are going to be battled out between Redding, Duckworth, Robertson and Hernandez. My money would be on Redding and Duckworth and my wild card would be Hernandez.

I see one of the righties and one of the lefties taking the last 2 slots...I feel it'll be Redding and Robertson to start the year, with Hernandez starting in the pen and taking Robertson's spot as he shows he's strong enough coming back from injury. Duckworth seems like an excellent 7th inning guy to set up the Lidge-Dotel endgame, with long relief capability.

Once this Pettitte thing goes down, we have a very deep pitching staff:
    Pettitte
    RoyO
    WaMi
    Redding
    Robertson
    Carlos
    Duckworth
    Dotel
    Lidge
    Stone

That's 10 right there, maybe room for a Mike Gallo/Nate Bland/lefty and one more FA minor leaguer.

If we got Rocket Roger...I'd put our front 4 against anyone's (except the As)

Redding deserves a spot HANDS DOWN.

If he had half the run-support Robertson had last year, he would have been a 15 game winner for sure.

I'd say the fifth spot is a run-off b/t Duckworth and Hernandez. Robertson may be the odd man out...
