I don't think he starts over Mario Chalmers and almost certainly not over George Hill or C.J. Watson. Canaan is a short 3 point specialist and not much more.
Yes, but only one can get by his man on the bounce......honestly, I think the Rockets were at their best with Canaan starting at the PG spot. DD
Yeah his 2 FTA's per 36 minutes this season is legendary. When he tries to drive the lane the only thing he's proven to be really good at in the NBA is getting his shot blocked. A really impressive 27.5% of the time he shoots the ball within 5 feet of the basket, he gets his shot blocked. You won't find many players that efficient at giving the other team blocks.
Well arguing without fact (which I just did) tends to backfire . But I do think, (and once again this is opinion) you are being overly critical of him. He was more than just a three point shooter when he got minutes.
Really wish he wouldn't have got hurt in that one game(forget if it was GSW or the Clips), but he was shooting lights out before he got hurt. That injury set him back again. Would really like to see him get significant minutes with the starters to at least SEE if he can be the PG we need.
Perhaps you are right, I might be a bit overly critical as a reaction to those who are far too high on him. All of us are guilty of biases on occasion. I see Canaan as another (although shorter) version of Terry. When Canaan is playing well, he provides just about the same thing Terry does which is a nice redundancy to have in case Terry is not playing well. I don't see him as much of a playmaker, but that's not to mean he doesn't have value, he certainly does. Over the next few years he needs to learn how to play defense and continue to improve his passing game while learning that he'll get blocked WAY too often if he tries to go to the rim at an NBA level. If he can do those things, he'll prove me wrong and will be a solid NBA starter.
Not saying he didn't need the Dleague stint to get right physically...He did....but McFail was still misusing him before the injury and after. This kid will be fine. If he's not traded he'll develop into a top 15-20 NBA PG
It just feels like Beverly has hit his ceiling. He's not going to get any better offensively or defensively. He is even starting to regress a bit defensively. If he can stay an elite defensive player then I can accept his limited offense. Canaan has room to grow. He's shown flashes of being a playmaker and a sharpshooter. He needs to work on his consistency obviously, but I only see him getting better with more playing time.
So thrilled about the call up! Isaiah has really improved this season, not the kind of player that should still be on the d league, hopefully he will get some time against the Mavs
Wow. We're officially petitioning the team to start a backup player. This is going to be exciting. Any word yet from McHale or Morey?
He is certainly a better option at PG than Terry as long as his 3pt% stays where it is. He is a better defender than Terry, and better at getting to the rim. IMO it would be nice to have a scoring guard on the court when Harden sits.
Canaan has a worse pure point rating than Terry, lower 3 point %, isn't a capable defender even at a D league level, and his only real talent in going to the rim is how spectacular he is at getting his shot blocked. Other than that, your comment was on point.
Canaan has not been allowed to play the point for us ..... YET! So pure point rating....pile of garbage. We CANNOT keep running Terry out there as the backup playmaker. It's self-defeating. We take Terry away from the only thing he does great, which is spot up for open 3-balls and make him do something he is not good at, that is dribbling end-to-end with the basketball and attempt to create a shot for our team. It's double stooooopid. Canaan is young and fresh. He's a better defender than Terry (but that's not saying much because Terry is a huge negative on the defensive end), and he's a much better playmaker. Watch the games.
