Petition for Street in honor of George Carlin..

I'm stopping in for a latte at StarBucks later. Maybe I'll stop by Marshalls and pickup a stupid looking hat, preferrably a fedora or knit hat. I'm sure I'll feel much differently towards Carlin after that.

 

If Carlin Street gets passed, they oughta have some other streets just to complete the circle:

Roots Ave
The Wire Boulevard
Steve Jobs Street

 

Carlin was funny at times, but the last few decades, his shtick was just old. Everytime I watched him do standup, I always had a feeling of "yeah I seen this before". Sorry man, I know he's an idol to some, but he was living on his reputation for a while.

 

I'm all for naming a street after George Carlin. I just wish they'd find one in Austin for the honor, then I could drive my car down Carlin Street.

 

I'm sure there used to be a pretty nice street in Austin that was nice in the 70s, got rundown in the 80s and 90s, but got gentrified in the last decade or so.

 

what do you even mean by any of this? I'm not sure you are connecting George Carlin to culture or history, or comedy, correctly.

an honorary street in NYC is passed by city council when someone from that neighborhood has a significant impact and leaves behind a legacy. Carlin is a legend of comedy and a wordsmith, for five decades.

he was the host of the very first SNL broadcast in '75, he was at the center of at least two major court cases including the Supreme Court regarding the FCC and censorship.

he has won multiple Grammy awards for his comedy albums and has written numerous books on culture and society.

you don't have to be a fan but you should do some research on his history and legacy.

why do you keep talking about hipsters and gentrification?

 

I know exactly who he is.

I just think he's overhyped and not relevant for the last 2 decades of his life. shrug

 

everyone has their own tastes but you have to respect a guy who had the career he did and is pretty much in the top 10 (and mostly top 5) stand up ranking you can find...and just about any comedian you can find.

Plus, saying that he wasnt relevant in the 80's and 90s is borderline stupid. Maybe the last 10 years of his life he slowed down, but let's see what you do after youre 61 and spend 40 years in comedy

he pushed boundaries few did before him and although you may not agree with his personal beliefs, he made people both think and laugh

 

I hated his last 2 HBO specials, but stuff he did in the 90s was my favorite part of his career.

Grieving relatives are not credible advocates, comedians aren't historical figures. And again, no way in hell Carlin would have wanted any of this, especially now that there's a controversy.
