Mad respects for my boy Mr. Carlin His Soul Rest In Peace, but... no, sir. Dude was just a comedian... that was it. Much better comedians, that I know of, don't have streets named after them. Call me when there's a Jerry Lewis or Charlie Chaplin street.
Chaplin Avenue in San Fernando Valley near Clark Gable's ranch and Charlie Chaplin Avenue in Las Vegas.
^^ New York City? Yeah, still NO. What famous comedians... or "poets", as Royals mentioned... have streets named after them? I bet if he were alive and saw all this trouble, he'd say "just let it go, fellas, no need for all this grief with the Church peeps."
Much better comedians, that I know of, don't have streets named after them. Yeah? name one. How about a Bill Hicks Blvd. for Houston? (petition website must be jammed! won't open)
"In 2008, a road called the Bob Dylan Pathway was opened in the singer's honor in his birthplace of Duluth, Minnesota" Chaplin didn't make his mark in NYC. and I won't be surprised when Dylan gets a street named after him in Greenwich Village in the future or after his passing. NYC has streets honoring famous people everywhere. they take a section of a street and change the name of the sign on the corner is basically all it entails. Charlie Parker Place, Malcolm X Blvd. Walt Whitman has parks and bridges named in his honor. it won't be difficult to find a poet. I'll call you.
it took all of 5 minutes to find. "West 84th Street is also known as Edgar Allan Poe Street, after the poet who lived there" article on all the street names in NYC named after famous people(writers included) http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/11/nyregion/west-69th-street-group-opposes-street-renaming.html
You think Jerry Lewis is better than George Carlin? As a comedian? I can't even fathom... This explains all the emoticons. Carlin, uh, wasn't real big on religion. I don't think he'd mind pissing off the archdiocese.
Carlin wouldn't have wanted this crap, especially the petition. Really sad thing about Gen X and beyond: the first ones sheltered and obtuse enough to treat movies as historical events and entertainers as heroes.
No support from me. Carlin was funny... at least when he was young but he when he got old he was boring and tried to push his political beliefs to hard in his comedy routines.
Few institutions have been more destructive, or evil than the Catholic Church. Think of zeal and power they are exhibiting to stop a street being named after a comedian and compare their lethargy (and worse) in stopping thousands of children all over the world from being buggered by their priests.
I've never put anyone on ignore before but this post really has me considering it. The golden age of the catholic church is over. Give Carlin his respect.
It was his daughter Kelly Carlin that wants the street named after her father.. Carlin grew up there and back then it was called, "Irish Harlem." I really don't see any harm in naming a street after oh I don't know one of the greatest stand up comedians to ever lived???
Yeah being in his 70's still doing stand up tours and specials on HBO is considered boring and trite...
LOL, Swoly-D, bless his heart. The more he tries to dig in, the more artillery shells rain down on his position.
How about naming it "Overrated Comedian Street" Or "Same Old Crap For 30 Years Street" Or "Hey Look Religion Sucks Weed is Funny Street" (Oh I'm sorry that's like 50,000 other comics out there) I prefer "Ponytail D-bag Who Just Seemed Annoying to Be Around Because All He Would Do is Cry and Moan About How Everyone Just Isn't as Observant as He Is Because They're All Caught Up in Their Own Commercialism BS Because Capitalism Sucks Avenue"
