Dueling pianos is just a term that came up for the concept in the 80's. There's not really any true dueling other than sometimes we'll do dueling banjos (song from Deliverance). There are two baby grand pianos and two piano players at a time. We take requests from the audience and play pretty much any kind of music, but mostly songs that most of the crowd knows like Brown-eyed Girl, Margaritaville, Journey, etc... Between the four players we know over a thousand songs. We also interact with the crowd to get them to sing along with the parts of songs that most people know. A big draw to our club is when people want to embarrass their friends on birthdays or bachelorette parties. We do a lot of comedic songs throughout the night. All of the piano players also sometimes play the drums on songs that need it. It's definitely a unique concept for a bar. We were packed last night with a coaches convention and it was pretty funny to see all of those coaches drunk and acting crazy. I haven't heard back yet about getting printable passes and I'll let you know when I get them. They don't serve food and I think that the doors will open around 7:00. The show starts at 8:00 and goes until 2:00.
I work a block away from the Pavilions. If you can hook me up, I'll stay late after work tomorrow, walk over, and check it out.
The original is in Austin and it's my favorite place to go. The guys know over 100 songs and sing requests. They get birthday girls on stage. They do fight song challenges where whenever someone puts money into the pot for a school, they play it. Just a great place.
I just got passes in an e-mail. If you want to go, send me an e-mail at thefireants@yahoo and I'll forward you the invitation. I would suggest getting there early to avoid lines as we often hit capacity here in Austin, I don't know how it's going to be there in Houston this weekend. Also, for any of you that ever want to come to Austin Pete's I can usually get you in for free (not a huge group) if you let me know that you're coming. We don't charge a cover during the week, just the weekends though.
Wow you're with the fireants? I love those guys! Heard them on KPFT back in 2003 and been a fan ever since.
Wow! I wouldn't know that anyone would know our band (now defunct). KPFT was great to us and we had a really good time playing on their live broadcasts and some of the other events that we played with them. Really good people. It was always weird to listen to the radio late at night and hear myself singing. We even had a song on KLOL 420 or whatever it was called because it was a song about growing weed.
I love Pete's in Austin, spent a lot of money there!. Will def have to check the new one in Houston out. The new pavillion area sounds pretty coool. House of blues, petes, Lucky Strike (bowling alley) is opening up in couple months as well.
Could someone give me the parking tips for that area? Preferably a cheap/free place where I definitely won't get towed. Downtown has always been a PITA to deal with.
Sounds really fun. So no food. So you should go grab dinner before heading there? Is it a good place for happy hour?
free on the streets after 6 PM in downtown. i've been to HOB a couple times and always parked on the street with no probs. just like the rockets games.
Yes, same as the one up there. Some of the players from Dallas will be at the Houston club. It should be a good show. By the way the passes that I have to e-mail are large files like 5 mb so if your e-mail can't handle that big of a file let me know and I'll figure something else out.
They have these all over Vegas and they are Really funny, fun and great when your plastered. Free passes? sign me up!
Went to the Houston one tonight. Was pretty cool--really strong, fairly cheap drinks. Not really my scene, but I can see a lot of people loving this kind of thing, so I recommended it based on the percentages. Probably would have dug it more if my girl could hold her liquor and stay till closing.
