I guess you had your tv off cause I saw scola knocking down a lot of open jumpers. Are you implying that any gm in his right mind would take scola over aldridge?

The majority of the GMs in the league, if not all of them, would take Aldridge over Scola any day. He's five years younger, 2-3 inches taller, more versatile, and has a higher ceiling.

It's easy to go back and forth between Shane Battier and Rudy Gay because they are polar opposites on the floor. Battier's a steady, composed player who specializes in fundamental defense. The team will always come first in Shane's mind. Gay, on the other hand, is an offense-first player, who's erratic and out of control at times. Also, he has picked up a reputation as a me-first player.

Scola and Aldridge, on the other hand, are not that different in their styles of play. Both play well with their back to the basket, have the ability to step out and knock down the mid-range jumper, and crash the boards effectively. Scola has a very slight edge in rebounding and FG %, but Aldridge out performs Luis in nearly every other aspect of the game. Plus, he's 5 years younger!

Aldridge is more aggressive offensively, but that's also because he's the key man in Portland's frontcourt, whereas Yao was the man down low for Houston. But, that's a testament to Aldridge's offensive arsenal, and his willingness to assert himself down low. Also, both players shoot around 75% from the free throw line.

Scola's a force for Houston and he could very well be our leading scorer this season, so I'm not trying to knock him for any reason, but does he do anything significantly better than LaMarcus Aldridge at the power forward position?

Oh, you didn't see him putting the same spin move/scoop shot on Aldridge that worked on Odom, pretty much the only post move that he has, I digress.

As for GM's, based solely on that series, and disregarding their age/salary - it's a very close call. Their ultimate production was very similar, despite Aldridge playing a lot more minutes and taking a boatload more shots.

    Scola 16.2 - 6.7 56% 3 (72 shots) 32 MPG
    Aldridge 19.5 - 7.5 49% (104 shots) 39 MPG

You also appear to be not cognizant of the fact that the Houston series wasn't an aberration, it's very widely recognized taht Aldridge is among the very worst defensive players from the 4 spot in the league....many have commented on this.

In your estimation though, he is so far and away above Scola/Landry that, neither would get more than token minutes, just like journeyman flop Channing Frye.

That's just plain stupid, you're smarter than that.

He's a much better rebounder, Aldridge is pretty lousy on the boards for a guy his size, which is why he carries a mediocre rebound rating in the 12's...Scola meanwhile is at 16.

Sam, i'm not going to even get into a foolish argument over who is the better player between scola and LA. Aldrridge is the 2nd option, sometimes 1st who receives the double where as scola is a 3rd who benefits from others being doubled. When teams have paid attention to scola, utah and lakers, he shot 42% fg. To scolas credit, he still rebounds the ball, but scola can't guard aldridge in his dreams. Now you can pull stats out your ass, but there isn't a gm in the league that will take scola over aldridge.

Good, because that's not the argument we're having, you were pushing the fiction that Scola is closer on the spectrum to Channing Frye and couldn't hold a candle to Aldridge, when in fact he matches up with Aldridge very favorably in a number of categories, both overall and head to head.

Scola vs. Aldridge is pretty obvious. Aldridge is better, younger, taller, more athletic, etc. Scola is in the conversation, which is a testament to his skill set and capabilities, but of course you'd take Aldridge. But as someone else mentioned, if Scola was on the Blazers last season, he'd also be gettign solid minutes. And Landry would be playing ahead of Frye, too.

I see where you're going lee...which is, you've personally seen a lot of Andersen - which few of us have - and aren't that impressed. Plus, he's older, and as much of a risk as anything. Where you get yourself in trouble is clamoring for guys like Channing Frye. The guy is just not a solid, regular rotation player in the NBA, and doesn't have a ton, or any, "upside". He's younger, but that's about it.

If it comes down to a team of young sucky players or older sucky players...well, I don't really think it matters that much...you'd eventually stop paying attention.

But looking SPECIFICALLY to next year, and the few after that, and this current Rockets squad. I have not seen Andersen, and will still give him the benefit of the doubt - or more appropriately, give Morey the benefit of the doubt. But, even if he is mediocre at best, like Frye, and has no upside, like Frye, there are some young players on the team who might at a minimum benefit from a hungry, older foreign player coming in who has at least had some success as a winner in his recent history. The team might still suck at the end of the day. If not, it's no big deal. Basically, I'd rather see if Andersen can turn into something than take what I know Frye is.

Would I rather have...oh, say, a Marreese Speights type player. Now that I would for sure. Young, his rookie season stats arguably no better than Frye's were, but Speights does still have that upside. But I don't think that type of player was/is available.

I don't see how a Frye or Petro help, I just don't, irrespective of Andersen's talent.

I don't know who the hell Peter John Ramos is. It's a p*rn star name if I've ever heard one. I don't see a need to add him to the roster, but as a training camp invite, sure.

With our current lack of depth at the Center position, I'd take Ramos.

Just get him to run and hold his hands up.

Get Deke to show him something

Never said that, I said that on a team that is young and loaded at the 4/5 spot that scolandry probably would play 13 mins a night, but its not because they can't play. Just like on La, josh powell gets no run, but we have seen that when he plays, he's very effective. His problem is when you have Odom,Gasol, and Bynum, unless someone gets injured, you're not going to play. They 4/5 have versitilty to which they can play with each other and not lack anything.

Back to portland, Oden is the #1 pick, aldridge is a really good player and pryz is a shot blocker rebounder and physical presence. If you take frye off and add scola or landry, who is going to sit. I know Aldridge can man the 5, but is he going to play it enough that you have 2 defensive/rebounding type guys like oden and pryz that scola or landry will log 30 mins, aldridge 36mins and oden and pryz split 30mins? I doubt that.

JayZ, I think I'm just misuderstood :D. For real though, I just see it this way and I haven't changed about the rrockets situation. Its really not about clamoring for frye or jordan for that matter, its merely getting to a point.

The rockets knew before the draft Yao was going to likely done for the season. We know this now because they applied for the exception before the draft. They didn't get it granted till during the moritoriam period. So now its like, what are we going to do for a big man? I know for a fact that Dumars was trying to do everything in his power to geg rid of that pick. When morey talked about getting into the mid round, I just knew it was going to be detroit and maybe the target would be Mullens. It didn't happen, so it moves on. Free agency comes up and we still have the same situation on our hands. Just my own personel choice even with the knowledge of tracy being back in the fold, I just think it would be a great time to throw 2 young 7 ft ers in the mix or 1 young guy and 1 older vet. The team can't replace Yao per se the doubles and the low blk production, I just think it would been nice to have a guy like petro and frye or some combo like that to play this year. Those 2 splitting the centers mins and maybe we come out with 16 ppg and 12 rebs and 2 blks out of that spot for 4m combined. Then next year when or if Yao comes back, you have 2 young bigs to back Yao up or maybe 1 plays well enough that they can play with yao and maybe scola is signed and traded for something.

Maybe you say or people say its unrealistic and I'm being stubborn, I guess, but I just feel like getting a 30 yr old import that has reached his ceiling and will have to adopt to the nba has just as big of a bust factor as sgning 2 young guys. Maybe Morey does have something in the cards to bring on another big guy, who knows? The season will be here soon enough and I guess we will have to wait and find out.

Scola's a better low post player than anybody on Portland's roster. But he'd barely play because 6-Foul Oden would crowd him out? Whatever, this is all r****ded. The bottom line is that Channing Frye f-cking blows, and manages to do so more and more every year...putting him in the same sentence with Scola is laughable.

I think it's amazing this thread has gone on so long on a rumor for a player that "might" be talking to the Rockets. He's not any better than the 7 fter Marcus Campbell from last year's training camp.

Hate to sound desperate, but if he can run and hold his hands up and play something that resembles "D" I'd sign him.

please don't sign this guy, i watched the puerto rican team play, and he's a scrub. he would be a 3rd string 5 on a crappy team, i mean, he's horrible. one thing i like is the fact that he's 7'3 but if he can't do anything with that size, it doesn't mean anything.

Didn't Yao own Dwight Howard all season and made him his personal b**** but I would still take him as a Rocket. Yao made a lot of people his whipping boys :D
