The big deal is reciprocation. If someone is polite and courteous to you, be considerate of others and reciprocate by being polite and courteous to them. Recognize that someone has been polite to you, appreciate it, and demonstrate your appreciation by reciprocating.

(note: when I say 'you' I'm not specifically referring to you, wakkoman)

And to them, saying "uh huh" is reciprocating the politeness.

People get their panties in a bunch over the weirdest ****.

A response like that is the very definiton of being impolite. Which is why you don't understand the issue.

How would you have liked me to phrase it so I wouldn't hurt your feelings?

I think it's impolite to be upset by someone's actions when their intentions were to be polite.

My feelings weren't hurt at all. It's impolite to say 'don't get your panties in a wad' as opposed to 'please don't take this the wrong way' or something along those lines.

Now that we've established that you DO understand that nuances in speech make a big difference, let me reiterate my point again: Saying 'uh huh' to 'thank you' is acknowledgement. Saying 'You're Welcome' is acknowledgement AND reciprocation of politeness. It's just a little different, but it makes a big difference.

If they don't reciprocate being courteous, so what? No need to be annoyed or angry. I mean, the whole point of being courteous is because you are a polite person, not because you are expecting someone to be courteous back, no?

They only make a difference to people who are tied down to specific phrases. Language evolves. People now sometimes say "uh huh" as opposed to "of course" or "you're welcome" or "anytime". I just don't see the big deal.

Occasionally I wait tables on the weekends for extra cash. I catch myself saying "uh huh" in response to someone saying "thank you" all the time. I try to stop it, but it is a tough habit for me to break. I think the reason I say it is because I hear "thank you" so many times throughout a shift it's tedious to say "you're welcome" over and over.

True - and I don't go crazy over it or anything. But it's a gratifying feeling to know that someone else returns a kindness for a kindness.

Haven't they done that already by doing the thing you said "thank you" for?

A few years ago, I had a discussion with my attorney for legal consultation. Maybe he was having a bad mood at that moment, he was really pissed off when I kept saying 'uh huh' to answer his questions. Eventually he yelled (almost) at me to be more assertive and say 'yes' instead of 'uh huh'.

I say "uh huh" all the time when I hold the door open for ladies and they say thank you. I didn't realize it was driving them to the edge of insanity.

Uh, huh. I'm guilty from time to time.
