I've been a huge Chuck Hayes fan since he's joined the team. There isn't a player I root for more. That's why his lack of a jumper is so frustrating to me. It's the most basic fundamental in the game. I'm just perplexed how a player who works as hard as him can't get that fixed.
Work on a jump shot??? The guy is only hitting on 53% of his wide open layups. Give me a break. My 9 year old son would beat him in a game of h-o-r-s-e shooting nothing outside of 3 feet.
I know you have rooted for him durvasa, you can typically tell by how a person posts. If you want my honest opinion at this point, everyone has him thinking about it too much. If you go back and watch some of his college games, his shot was much much better than it is right now. Heck it was even better last year than it is now. I would imagine that a LOT of people are giving him advice on how to improve his shot, when really he just needs to relax and shoot it. It will be interesting to me to see what happens now... his role is going to have to change if he wants to stay in the lineup for more minutes, because without Tmac and Yao, Chuck's few easy buckets each game are going to be gone. With Tmac out they were decreased, but with both out, there is really no reason for the opposing team to fall off of him as much defensively. Those two made him better offensively, as I suppose they should, by drawing all the defense and leaving him open underneath, so I am anxious to see how he steps up to contribute.
I can assure you that Hayes has a decent 15 foot jumper. he can make them all day when doing drills. What he needs is confidence in game situations.
Saying all his shots are wide open layups is a wild exxageration, and you know it. http://www.82games.com/0607/06HOU10A.HTM He's over 60% on inside shots when you ignore the tip-in attempts. And most of them aren't wide open. He has to rush the shots very often because he's small and he can't score effectively over taller defenders. That results in frequent misses, but still a relatively high percentage. A 6'6 PF that shoots 60% on inside shots is actually pretty good.
That bit of information, while encouraging, drives me crazy. I'm sorry to pile on the JVG-hate, but if a player is capable of doing things in practice that will benefit the team greatly then it's largely the coaches' responsibility to give him the confidence and opportunity to do so in games as well.
Not really (more than anyone could imagine.. But he was a bad shooter). Hayes is a much better shooter.
Its still not the shot we want especially when you have Yao , Head and battier on the floor. Its not like he is Juwan Howard out there (very good consistent shooter). The point is that if he absolutely had to shoot it then he could make a decent amount.
Oh, I know he can shoot them. When he and Erik Daniels were playing high/low inside at UK he made plenty of them in game situations. The problem is getting him confidence to do it on this level, to do that he would have to make a few, and making them requires him to shoot them.... which is unlike to happen a lot because he is struggling. sigh... maybe if he can get his free throws under control that will give him a little more confidence in his shot so that he can take a few jumpers that he isn't hesitating on. BTW, IC2000 are you the one that works at Toyota Center?
I think Chuck can be a special role player for us in the years to come. I just hope the organization doesn't give up on him too quickly. IC2000, is he a guy you feel the coaching staff really wants to keep, or could he easily fall out of the rotation or possibly be traded?
i think they need to correct his FT shooting stance or whatever it is. what he does is he he rocks back on his heels while his toes are pointed in the air and when he's about to shoot it, he rocks forward on his toes and releases the ball. that is a really weird habit and frankly it annoys me. just bend your knees, chuck. and as far improving jumpshots and stuff, why is it only superstars shoot probably 1000 jumpers everyday so they can perfect their jumper, yet these players who have horrible shots--we never hear about them practicing them....
Here's an interesting stat regarding Chuck's free throws. At home, he's shooting only 7 for 19 on the season (36.8%). On the road, he's shooting 16 for 21 on the season (76.2%). Last season, he shot pretty much the same percentage both at home (19/30) and on the road (10/15). But that wide disparity does suggest that maybe his free throw woes this season has more to do with nerves than his actual ability. He was 67% last year as a rookie, which isn't terrible.
Instead of the "Perfect Jumper", it sounds like the coaching staff has him watching the "Do Not Take a Jumper" video to prepare for games, which is just fine with me. Chuck is a special player, but if his J isn't good enough for actual use in games, then he should keep it to practice.
